FORT WORTH A big winner at the 2009 Los Angeles International Beer Competition held recently, The Covey Restaurant and Brewery, brought home five awards to Fort Worth. That includes one gold, two silvers, and two bronze medals for its hand-crafted beer, according to Covey brewmaster Jamie Fulton, who fielded six beers at the competition last month.
The Covey's Scotch Ale brew aced the Strong Scotch Ale category, snagging a gold medal. Silver medal winners in the Belgian-Style Strong Specialty Ale and Smoke-Flavored Beer categories were The Covey's "100" and Smokestack Stout, respectively. The Covey was awarded bronze medals for their Texas Wheat in the American-Style Hefeweizen category and their Vienna Lager in the Vienna-Style Lager category. The Covey's Vienna Lager also won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup in 2008.
"It's thrilling to win awards for five of six Covey beers I entered into the festival," said Fulton. "It also confirms our expanding confidence in creating world-class beer right here in Fort Worth, Texas."
Texas Wheat and Vienna Lager beers are currently available at the restaurant located at 3010 S. Hulen Street. To obtain the most variety with his brews, Fulton frequently rotates his fresh brews in the restaurant. Scotch Ale, "100," and Smokestack Stout, although not currently on tap at The Covey, may be back on tap in near the future.
Organized and run by the L.A. County Fair, the Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition is registered with the Beer Judge Certification Program. In closed sessions with a panel of at least three judges, the evaluation took beers and compared them in a blind tasting against others of similar style, as defined by Brewers Association style guidelines. The competition was open to any licensed brewery or brewpub, and all beers entered were required to be available for sale to the general public. The public will taste of winning beers during the L.A. County fair September 5 through October 4.
Established in April 2006, The Covey is a brew pub that's two venues in one: a comfortable pub with a full bar and a casual yet elegant restaurant with an extensive menu and custom-crafted, award-winning beer, brewed on site.
