Here we go again: Dallas considering renaming Young Street for Cesar Chavez
Young Street, a road that runs by Dallas City Hall, is the latest attempt to rename a road for Cesar Chavez in Dallas. The renaming process is still in the early stages, however. Young Street also runs by the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Public Library, and the yet-to-be-built convention center hotel, and is thus considered to be a good location despite its relative shortness (1 mile or so).

Is the Cesar Chavez Task Force going to go through as many popular, busy, well established roads and street until they find one that won't have so much controversy?
This is getting really old.

Ok we will have Cesar Chavez and MLK - Who is going to be the Asian hero named for the Asian population in Dallas? How about the French folks who settled Dallas? The Irish people here? Lets break it down into all the subcatagories of population and give everyone one named street.
Or
How about we stick with naming the streets numbers and letters.

You run out of letters pretty quickly, Peter, and I don't know if I'd want to live on 11493rd Street. :)

I don't know, Alex. I used to live in Salt Lake City and their numbered grids were really convenient. I could find any address without a map.

Burly - this is not about Chavez or a street name.
It is about humiliating helpless city leaders in the name of inclusiveness. It's about building a cohesive voting block from a genuinely dispersed demographic for a few people to leverage into longterm careers.
It's about the race card.
And can we PLEASE stop referring to it as the "Task Force" ?
It's LULAC

I took the “task force” from the nbcdfw.com article. I didn’t realize there was a “preferred” name. Perhaps you should inform them too.

Part of Pearl going through Farmers Market is already named after Cesar Chavez. We just need to finish that process and rename all contiguous parts of Pearl going north, along with the two blocks of Moody. There are no records for the source of either of these street names, either Pearl nor Moody. Thus no pioneers name would be lost or moved such as Young who is well documented in Dallas History.
By renaming most of Pearl the heart of the former Little Mexico would be connected with Farmers Market and pass the Cathedral of Guadalupe in the process. Cesar Chavez had a special devotion to our Lady of Gaudalupe.

Bill's site has info from the city archivist on these points: http://www.studentmotivation.org/Cesa...
Hey, the Yosts could rename their bar "Chavez at Commerce."

Mike, that source for Moody is one the Archivist mentioned but he could find no related documentation. There was also an evangelist during that time in history who was very popular and he thought that was a greater possible source for the name. But again there is no documentation.

Mine was not intended to be offensive, just an honest and candid observation, so if it offended anyones gentler senses, I apologize.
However, I do stick to my point concerning the street naming idea, I think we should do more an "honorary placing" than changing the name outright. Plus, we have plenty of local deserving latins who deserve a street named after them before Chavez, who did a quick 12-15 mins in town sometime 20 years ago. Im guessing the LULAC gang has forgotten about them and their contributions accordingly.

Well, it has to exist..Pablo...communities old and new are that way....and who made Dallas in the first place, I dont like it..but it has to happen,.....kind of like renaming Fairmont st.. to George Michaels in 2014..
And when the French came to Dallas in the 1850's,they would name streets after their world...like Cantagrel or Germania or Willaim Tell or even Junius....and so on...
Yes it is a drag, but hey arent we a drag if we dont compromise.....besides, the Lettice toco is one of my main meals...and my background is very ......old and real...admit it...who are you angry Amercian's and who are you angry Immigrant's.... A/T, Name that lane game...

As I have said before, why not Elm or Live Oak? Its not like the trees will rise up against us like on The Happening.
Also, the cost must be covered by private donations or wait for a new street to be built. We cannot waste taxpayer money renaming.

Nina - while there is still a single address that does not somehow honor the late great Cesar Chavez of Arizona, none of us can rest comfortably.
Where there is a Lane or a Boulevard... he should be there. Where there is a Court or Crossing... he should be there.
If there is so much as four pieces of unfused asphalt, some semblance of Cesar Chavez should be erected and maintained at public expense.
Until then we are all just bigots.

chO - your cries are heard.
Brilliantly, you have solved EVERYTHING.
Henceforth, throughout the land let "tarmac" no longer be used, nor "Road", nor "Trail". All things formerly paved will be Cesar Chavez. And then all methods of transport everywhere will honor this brave Union Organizer from another state.
Pearl Expressway becomes Pearl Cesar Chavez. Likewise, Central Cesar Chavez, George W. Bush Toll-Cesar Chavez and Elm Cesar Chavez will forever memorialize not only this great man's work, but those unwilling to rest until all byways and pikes bear the grand weight of this marvelous political juggernaut.
