Dallas’ Magnolia Theater shows free classic movies in July

Odd.

For some reason there are only three free movie screenings scheduled for the month of July at Dallas' Magnolia Theater, now that we've become used to getting four.

I want my money back!

(No, wait ...)

Anyway, one of the shows amounts to a double feature, which I suppose makes up for the deficit. Don't we wish the national deficit could be so easily accounted for? (I know I do.)

The big excitement this month is in relation to the great and fanciful classic, The Wizard of Oz (1939, dir. Victor Fleming), which will be projected digitally from the Turner Classic Movies feed on Thursday, July 2 at 7 p.m.

But wait! there's more -- and the more comes before, as a documentary about the making of the movie (called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Fifty Years of Magic) precedes the show, starting at 6 p.m.

On Tuesday, July 14 at 5:15 p.m., check out Harold and Maude ('71, dir. Hal Ashby), which turned the May / December romantic theme on its head by conferring the December role on a woman (Ruth Gordon, as Maude). Talk about your cougars.

Then on Monday, July 20, suit up for The Right Stuff ('83, Philip Kaufman). The movie follows the personal and professional exploits of the Mercury 7 astronauts, who lived life to the fullest and pioneered space flight -- all in a single 193-minute sitting (YIKES!).

We'll need popcorn refills for that one.

Just show up at the box office on the day of the show, pick up your free tickets, and enjoy.
