The Dallas Stars departed from their normally-defensive drafting history Friday night, selecting right wing Scott Glennie of the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings with the eighth pick in the draft.
Glennie was considered by most scouting reports to be a 11th-18th pick, but the Stars and new GM Joe Nieuwendyk apparently liked Glennie enough to reach with their highest draft pick since 1996.
Glennie registered 70 points (28 goals, 42 assists) in 55 games with Brandon of the WHL. After missing some time due to broken elbow, he had 3 goals and 15 assists in 12 playoff games for Brandon, which made it to the conference finals.
Glennie picked up 2 goals and 1 assist in 4 games as Canada won gold at the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament. As a rookie with Brandon in 2007-08, he finished fifth in rookie scoring with 58 points (26 goals, 32 assists) in 61 games.
Glennie is known as one of the fastest players in the draft, a fearless penalty killer and one of the most improved players in the draft. Scouts marveled at the 18 year old's work ethic and willingness to go into the corners and the heavy spots on the ice. Glennie is also an excellent playmaker, a great passer and shooter, but needs to improve his defensive game and physical strength.
