South Dallas neighborhood to restore historic, whites-only cemetery

3

The Lagow Cemetery in South Dallas saw its first burials in the late 1800s and operated through the 1920s, and remains the final resting place of nearly 100 former Dallas residents. It was also a whites-only cemetery. But citing a shared history as Dallasites, approximately 50 volunteers from the Dallas Leadership Foundation will clean up the forgotten space on Saturday in honor of those who rest there.

Today I visited Lagow Cemetery. It's on Carpenter Avenue, a half-block north of 2nd Avenue (just around the corner from the Black Warriors Motorcycle Club).

Three-quarters of the markers are long gone and many of the remaining ones have obviously been moved from their original positions. Highest and best use of this property is cultivation of poison ivy (which is already rampant).

This is an old story that has got to have more help again, The Lagow Cemetery of Dallas County was once land situated around the Lagow School house some were around or before 1891,some early pioneer's are buried there.. while a census was taken in 2002 on the area...

Survey done in 1948 by Willie Carlisle and the final historical story on line by Jim Wheat Cemeteries and Historical of Dallas County..

Thus light on this area, which was once known as the Lagow sand pits, where Prehistoric skull's of Mastdon heads were found over the past 90 years....

As for the African Amercian,Hispanic and Chinese burials, yes these multicutural grouping's.....the remedy to identify these graves will cost tax payers another 100,000 dollars to produce...thus the Mastadon heads, were given to Yale in the 1930's and so you have folk lore and chewing tobacco...A/T, Chew,... dont spit when it comes to Cemeterie's in South Dallas...
