The Padres' chief weapon was pitching ... pitching, and timely hitting, two, two chief weapons.
ARLINGTON The Texas Rangers once again went quietly into the night Sunday evening, amassing just a single hit all game in a deflating 2-0 loss to the San Diego Padres at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The loss, the seventh in the last ten games, dropped the failing Rangers to 40-34, a game and a half behind the surging LA Angels for first place in the division. The Angels visit Arlington for a three-game series on Monday.
After a first inning single from Michael Young, Padre pitcher Chad Gaudin pitched nearly perfect baseball the rest of the way, giving up just two walks and striking out nine Texas batters. It was the fourth time the Rangers had been shut out this season, and second time they only managed one hit -- on May 18 against the Detroit Tigers, and Michael Young was coincidentally the lone Rangers hitter in that game as well.
The Rangers wasted an excellent start from rookie Tommy Hunter, who gave up just two runs on seven hits over six-plus innings of work. Hunter, who did not walk a single batter, fell to 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA.
