McKinney library, July 4th event win awards

— McKinney city staff recently accepted two awards for services provided to residents. The Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) presented the Silver Star award for the inaugural Red, White and BOOM! event at the annual TAMI awards banquet this month. And the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library was presented with the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award.

TAMIO is an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League. The event took second place in a statewide category for Best Special Event that included cities of all population categories.

"It was the combination of efforts across city employees, volunteers and businesses that made the inaugural Red, White and Boom! event such an enormous success," said Main Street Program Director and 2008 event chair Ty Lake. "Everyone involved worked extremely hard to bring this special, first-time event to our residents and visitors."

The Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department is putting together the second annual Red, White and Boom event this July 4. Details on the all-day event, which culminates in a spectacular fireworks display, can be found online.

The Hall Memorial Library won the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award for demonstrating commitment to quality library service and increasing service level in 2008. Out of the 565 public libraries in the state of Texas, only 33 received the award. The only public library in McKinney has seen record numbers in recent months. The John and Judy Gay Library is currently under construction, set to open in the fall.
