Dallas-based Belo to shut down printing facility in Arlington

7

— This letter was sent out by Belo VP William H. May Jr. informing customers of Belo's decision to shut down its printing facility in Arlington. The Arlington facility printed college newspapers, supermarket circulars, junk mail, and other second-tier jobs. As of April, all printing will take place in Plano.

Dear Customer,

I am writing to let you know that we will be relocating the DFW Printing Company operations to the Dallas Morning News' facility effective mid April, 2009. In the difficult and uncertain economic environment facing all businesses today, this move will enable our company to operate more efficiently and provide greater resources and stability for the future. The Arlington facility will be closed after the move to Plano.

Essentially, we are only relocating within our existing infrastructure. DFW Printing and the Plano facility have worked in a close printing partnership for a number of years. Some of DFW's customers are already serviced at the Plano facility and they will not be affected by this change.

Our Plano facility is located one mile north of the George Bush Tollway. Logistically, it offers easy access to points east, west, north and south. The facility has multiple bays for loading printed product and offers high-speec insert and labeling capabilities. And, because the facility houses TDMN's in-house mailer -- Design Mail -- we can now offer our customers timely, affordable mailing services.

I want to share some details regarding the consolidation and its benefits to customers. All sheetfed and mini-web and bindery operations will relocate intact to Plano and these services will continue to be provided as they are today. We will decommission our Goss Urbanite presses in favor of utilizing the double web-width presses at the Plano facility.

By using presses in Plano we can offer more press capacity and color, as well as the latest cold web offset print technology in the marketplace today. You'll see enhanced color registration and inking densities which yield a sharper, higher-quality product.

Because these presses are typically dedicated to the 48" (24") web width, we will be limited on the other paper sizes we can offer. In addition, we will also be limited in some types of paper that we can run. However, by converting to the smaller size, plus printing on larger, faster presses, we believe a savings opportunity awaits those customers that transition with us to the Plano plant. Again, customers who already print at the Plano facility will not be affected.

Consolidating operations within our existing printing infrastructure in Plano gives DFW Printing Company Inc. its beset opportunity to remain competitive. Since 1985, DFW Printing has been a quality- and customer-service leader in single sheet, web offset publications and commercial printing in North Texas. Utilizing newer technology, we will continue to offer the same high levels of service and quality that you've received as our valued customer.

Please expect a call from your sales representative in the coming weeks to discuss how the move will affect you and to develop a transition plan for a seamless move to Plano. We appreciate your understanding, and look forward to offering you high levels of service for print/color capacities and reproduction for publication printing. We are dedicated to partnerships with customers like you and to working with you into the future.

Best regards,

William H. May, Jr.

That's the plant that prints the Observer, along with many of the area's suburban papers I believe. In my experience, Midway Press has always done a better job at a better price.
