UPDATED: Fire in Dallas apartment building sends 30 residents out into the cold
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a "smoke in the area" call Saturday (Feb. 28) at 6:45 p.m. and found that the roof of an apartment building in the Fair Oaks Creek complex (8849 Fair Oaks Crossing) was rapidly going up in flames. Several residents were quickly evacuated, including one in a wheelchair.
The fire went to three alarms before being extinguished, and by that time there was enough water and smoke damage to eight units that they were rendered uninhabitable. (Plus, the roof collapsed.) The American Red Cross soon arrived to see to everyone's needs.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire, which is under investigation - initial reports indicate it may have started on the second floor.
UPDATE: The cause of the fire has been traced to discarded cigarette in a concealed second-floor walkway.
