Restaurant review: Frilly’s Seafood Bayou Kitchen in Denton

NT Daily

"Hey hey hey, where dat etouffee?"

This quotation on our order number at Frilly's Seafood Bayou Kitchen began our Cajun experience.

The menu was bursting with options of Louisiana goodness - po' boys, gumbo and etouffee. Prices ranged from $7 to $17, but the majority of the dishes were priced $11 and up - a little steep for college students, but not entirely out of reach.

The dining atmosphere was casual, despite the higher prices. We ordered at the front counter and then took a number to a booth in the corner.

The brick walls displayed purple and gold Mardi Gras beads, and reminded us of Bourbon Street. The blaring zydeco music completed the Cajun atmosphere as we waited for our food, which was a little long for our taste. However, the Southern waitress who brought us our food made sure to sashay her way around the restaurant to make sure everyone was pleased with their meals.

Dominique ordered the $7.50 Bayou chicken sandwich with french fries, which seemed most fitting for her small budget. The sandwich consisted of a juicy, grilled chicken breast on a toasted bun lightly coated with a spicy-flavored butter. The grilled chicken had a Cajun seasoning but the spice didn't overwhelm the taste of the sandwich.

The seasoned fries had an interesting mixture of sugar and spice -the taste took Dominique to potato heaven. She was very satisfied with this plentiful meal.

Jillian ordered the Pasta Mardi Gras, a shrimp and crawfish pasta with a cream sauce. Her dish arrived with two breadsticks and a heaping serving of creamy pasta. A crawfish dish can be messed up faster than a harmonica player in a zydeco band, but Frilly's managed to balance the dish's flavors well - not a bit fishy.

Generous amounts of shrimp and crawfish were mixed into the pasta noodles and creamy white sauce. Jillian could not think of a single thing the dish lacked. Her only complaint was that she couldn't manage to get as much of it into her mouth at once as her taste buds desired.

Frilly's has two locations in Denton, one on University Drive and the other on Loop 288.

We left Frilly's on University Drive with a little piece of Louisiana in our hearts.
