North Texas college students warned about risks of Mexico travel

3

As we're starting to hear in the national media, activities of the Mexican drug cartels are leading to increasing violence south of the border - and as a result, North Texas universities and colleges are warning their spring-breaking students to take care down there.

The University of North Texas, UT Arlington, Texas Wesleyan, SMU and TCU have each posted the U.S. State Department's travel alert about Mexico on their websites and published the alert in campus newspapers. (They have even sent notices to students on an individual basis, apparently.)

As chronicled in Rusty Fleming's chilling Drug Wars documentary (which was an official selection of Dallas' USA Film Festival 2008), the drug money-fueled violence is threatening to spill over into the U.S. In which case, spring breakers (and everyone else) could have a whole lot more to worry about.

Wow, Brenna, that outing to Canyonlands sounds like a great deal. If it wasn't full, I'd consider registering for classes just to be eligible for it!

To everyone, the dangers of travel to Mexico are mostly on the border towns. Go WAY south to Mazatlan, Mexico or Huatulco, Mexico. Safe, clean and away from the "REAL TOURISTS TRAPS" like Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. Cabo San Lucas, on the Baja peninsula tip, is THE BEST place to go. Safer, cheaper and better than the "college-boy/spring-break" spots everyone goes to nowadays! By the way, if you go to Cabo, boat-out to see the rock arch and stay at the Finisterra Hotel where the 12 foot crashing waves will lull you to sleep safely!! Just don't surf there!!!!!
