TCU announces opening of Honors College

0

Texas Christian University has announced they will transition their existing academic honors program into the new John V. Roach Honors College this coming August.

Named in honor of Fort Worth civic leader, businessman and former chairman of the TCU Board of Trustees John Roach, the college will be funded by a $2.5 million contribution from Paul and Judy Andrews.

The Honors College will offer "small, discussion-based classes, a focus on world cultures that mirrors TCU’s mission statement, and outstanding opportunities for undergraduate research in a student’s major or advanced interdisciplinary study in small colloquium classes."

The new college will house its academic offices, as well as a classroom, student gathering spaces and a classic debate chamber, housed in Scharbauer Hall (scheduled to open in January 2010).

All majors are eligible for the honors college, and those who complete the requirements will graduate from both their home college and the Honors College. Students accepted into the program will eventually (as of Fall 2010) have access to special housing in the renovated Milton Daniel dormitory.

Dr. Peggy Watson, Assoc. Professor of Spanish, serves as the current director of the Honors Program, and will oversee the transition of the existing program into the new Honors College; she has accepted a three-year appointment as Dean with this in mind.
