Fort Worth ISD unveils Southwest Academy for petroleum engineering and technology

The Fort Worth ISD Board of Education has approved the establishment of the Southwest Academy of Petroleum Engineering & Technology, beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. The Academy will be a “school within a school” at Southwest High School and is the first academy of its type in the North Texas area.

The Southwest Academy of Petroleum Engineering and Technology is a unique opportunity for a limited number of students to gain perspective and insight in the engineering, energy and petroleum fields. Through a partnership with the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), students will have the chance to visit with and learn from local engineering companies. This collaboration will bring young professionals from these fields to the classroom and allow students to work side by side with professionals in the various fields of study.

“This academy offers our students first-hand testimonies from those who work in these career areas,” said FWISD Superintendent Melody Johnson. “When they graduate, these students will be fully prepared for continued study or for direct entry into these fields of work.”

Academy teachers are provided with Petroleum Exploration and Production Technology training through universities and leading experts in the industry. This training, additional educational support and other academy costs are provided by the IPAA.

The Academy is limited to fifty (50) incoming freshman this coming school year (2009-2010). Due to the advanced academics involved and the number of students may apply, only the most qualified applicants will be accepted.

Interested student are encouraged to apply now. Additional information is available by contacting the Principal Laura Williams at Southwest High School, 817-370-5800. An application form is available on the District Web site, www.fwisd.org. Completed applications must be submitted to the Southwest High School office.
