Not an example of Chicken House chicken, but still looks tasty, doesn't it?

Not an example of Chicken House chicken, but still looks tasty, doesn't it?

Like other East Dallasites familiar with the golden crispy goodness that was Brothers Fried Chicken, we were not happy this fast food staple closed its drive-thru in 2008. For about a month, we've been tempted to stop by the new Chicken House on Gaston Avenue, which is in the same home as Brothers.

Last week, the craving was too strong for hubby, who couldn't settle for KFC or Popeye's. New ownership can come with disappointment -- not this time my friends. For those East Dallasites who were hooked on Brothers, the folks at the Chicken House have the same menu as Brothers and drive-thru speaker through which no one can hear. The only thing different appeared to be staff, who were just as efficient and friendly taking the order.

The real test: Did the chicken taste like Brothers. At home, we examined everything carefully. It smelled the same. The plain white box and "light" bread on top of the chicken looked the same. Stuffed in the corner of the box was a familiar plastic baggie of pickles and jalapeno condiments. A generous helping of greasy shoestring fries were piled high in the box.

Now, the chicken: It had the same dark, golden color as Brothers. This was a good sign. We bit into the chicken, and yes, it had the same crunch and savory flavor. The chicken was hot and moist, and the flavor went deep to the bone. We declared: This was the taste we remembered.

The next day we were surprised the crispy crust held up so well. We didn't need to warm it up. The cold chicken tasted even better the second day.

Recommendation: Get hooked all over again.

The fried chicken at Tom Thumb (E. Mockingbird location) is excellent. On Sundays they have an 8-piece special for $6.00 bucks.

I always ask how long it has been out of the fryer.

The quality and taste is suprisingly good. Better than the fomer Brothers Chicken (IMO).

Before Chicken House, before Brothers, there was Henderson Chicken. And there still is, up on Abrams at Royal. (Yes, I know there is also a location on Grand near Fair Park, but this one is closer--and that means hotter chicken when you get it home).

so i guess they did correct their fries. I went there after the new shop opened and it was surprisingly good. The fries were terrible though and I think i relayed that on this board

I second Henderson's at Royal/Skillman. Agent 99 swears by it, too!

Good as it gets and a Brother's clone inside, right down to plexiglass safety wall!

This old Brother's Chicken location is just as good if not exactly the same. The chicken tenders were excellent and bigger than Brother's. The service was better and faster and I also got a smile and thank you from the cashier. What a change!!!
