DMN picks up on St. Patrick’s Day “Avi vs. Greenville Ave. merchants” controversy
Pegasus News content partner (and tireless advocate of Lower Greenville Avenue peace and quiet) Avi Adelman gets a bark or two in edgewise on the virtual pages of the Dallas Morning News today (Friday, March 13).
To summarize: he wants this whole St. Patrick's Day party thing to go away from his Lower Greenville Ave. neighborhood. Which can come as no surprise to regular readers of this site, or to anyone who has ever visited the Barking Dogs blog.
Dealing something of a poke in the ribs to its interview subject (although, to be fair, the Greenville Ave. merchants who promote the party were also quoted), the piece goes on to provide full details on how to attend the Saturday evening (March 14) hooplah, including a map and parking tips.

Andrew says:
I have lived in the area for several years. Before that I attended SMU. Kinda knew what I was getting into when I moved here. I used to live on Marquita and Greenville (i.e. ground zero) I wasn't 100% percent happy with the crowds, so I bought a house a few blocks east. I did so because I had a problem not because it was wrong. My tastes changed, so I made a change.
I will tell you one thing. After the 2007 party just as I was sending my sons out to pick the trash up off our lawn on Marquita, a crew was coming by to pick up the trash. I gained a lot of respect for the organizers.
I mostly agree with Avi on the issues 364 days a year, sometimes in the case of last year 365. The bars need to be compliant with the ordinances set forth. I disagree with Avi when it comes to St. Patricks day. The city and the bar owners set up a contract and they follow it. I even have a party in front of my house. I set up trash cans by my sidewalk and people us them. They are respectful when the park in front of my house (However due to the new maps they cannot this year only on my side street as I am a corner lot.)
A one day party is the least of the worries I have in my area. The bigger blight is the businesses and residences that fall short of the established city codes. The reason that people take a leak on Avi's lawn is that they think his house is vacant. Many of the residences in the area apppear to be below human habitation standards. People don't take a leak on mine. When you respect your own property others will respect yours.

If that isn't a money quote, I don't know what is.

I have been wondering what the deal is with that. Several commenters on other sites have mentioned that Avi's own home does not appear to be up to code. Has anyone ever taken action and called the city on him?
Stones and glass houses yada, yada...

I have called on several other houses in the neighborhood to no avail. I have not called on Avi's since I do not see it from my house. I feel bad for calling him out like this, but my point is he would have a lot more cred in his arguement if his house wasn't decorated by the Munsters. Logic would still prevail though, since the bars and the party were already there.

Andrew: hey, if you were as busy writing angry diatribes and scoping out the neighborhood with binoculars from behind shuttered curtains for signs of wrongdoing, you'd fall behind on property upkeep, too.

Avi never wants anyone to have fun or at least in his neighborhood. Maybe he needs to put an outhouse on the corner of his lot. Sounds like it might fit right in.

Avi is a paranoid bitter old man who hasnt had a job or paid his taxes in years, not to mention he's a laughing stock in his neighborhood. Rumor has it he's getting booted out of his house in the not too distant future due to the property taxes not getting settled up. If thats the case, im buying the lot and knocking the shanty down

New year, old Avi grousing again about the after-party. The DMN is sooooo relevant.
I owned a place 5 blocks from "the cage" east of Greenville. Nobody in our area complained. Had a great time every year from 99-04!
And you're right -- for someone who wants the neighborhood down where he lives to be nice and quiet and free of litter and drunks, his house and yard are an absolute mess. If he spent half the time with a hammer and some paint as he does with a video camera and his rage, his neighbors would all be better for it.

Does anyone find it strange that Avi has not been joining in on this debate?
If Avi will conceed that he moved in the neighborhood knowing full well about the St. Patrick's party I will conceed that I moved into the neighborhood knowing full well about him.
The problem is, sometimes he makes a good point. He was the first to break that Lone Star towing was a bunch of crooks. He did so months before the Texas/OU towing incident. He has made a stand against the taggers. Albeight a very racist one as labeling all Greenville patrons as gangbangers. I agree that the bars need to be more compliant with all the laws, but in the case of the St. Patrick's day party, they are in compliance with the contract between them and the city.
He is consumed with this "conspiracy" between the bars and the neighborhood association. He has lost sight of working with the establishments as part of his war against them and the other neighborhood associations.

Andrew is so spot on it's not even funny. The Lone Star bit by Avi was fantastic (and I commented on the article commending him back then) but often these old cranks get so hell bent on a cause that they lose sight of what they ever wanted to accomplish in the first place. They go from reasonable intentions like making sure some bars are playing by the rules to essentially wanting every bar shut down and street blocked off.
James/Chip Northrup is the same way. What started as good intentions to make sure new lake lighting was respectful to neighbors and nature became a single handed mission to destroy the lighting proposal all together.
Some of these guys need a lesson in compromise if they want to make friends in life.

Andrew, maybe you should employ Avi’s longstanding plan and just repeatedly call 911 until someone pays attention to your complaints. Apparently it gets results. Of course you will risk everyone thinking you are crazy and DPD hating your guts…
I have seen him defend himself on other sites but I don’t recall him ever joining our conversations. Probably best that he doesn’t – I’ll bet that would be our biggest dog pile yet!

Yes, he claimed they NA was paid of some huge sum of money, but there is no proof, which is usually required to meet even the lowest standard of his particular brand of "journalism"..

Why doesn't Avi just move to Deep Ellum or the West End if he wants to live in a ghost town so bad?

LOL Avi had to play nice when ch 8 gave him a sound bite. Why didn't he have the guts to say "I'll be the one helping your car get towed and I really don't want any of you in MY hood"...Most probably because someone would come looking and knock the fat back right off what one assumes is his neck.

Has anyone else noticed the police car parked outside Avi's all weekend? It was still there this morning. Did the city park it there to discourage people taking action against him? Kinda strange for a person who complains about the cost by the city to benefit a select few to receive personalized city service.

ANDREW, this is interesting, a DPD police car parked right in front of Avi's place? All night, who pulled the strings on that one? Now I am mad. Something fishy there, like special attention/private security from DPD for only one man. Who said "YES" to that, or was it just a coincidence?
