Fort Worth-based American Airlines signs 17-year lease at Dallas Love Field

American Airlines has signed a 17-year lease at Dallas Love Field that extends the airline's commitment to 2028.

In addition, during the upcoming period when the terminal at Love Field is undergoing extensive reconstruction, American Eagle Airlines will suspend its service from Love Field. Eagle service between Dallas Love Field and Chicago O'Hare International Airport will be suspended effective June 11.

Eagle said the combination of difficult economic times, as well as the operational complexities caused by the need to move to alternate areas of the terminal during construction contributed to the decision.

"We have every intention of returning service to Love Field when the new terminal is completed," said Kevin Cox, American's Vice President - State and Community Affairs. "As further evidence of that, we've signed a new lease for space that solidifies our commitment at Love Field."

The new terminal at Love is expected to be complete in 2013. American Eagle will work with affected employees, where possible, to help find other opportunities within the company.

"While we're disappointed that Eagle is leaving Love Field for now, we understand the reasoning behind the decision," said Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. "And we are clearly encouraged by American's determination to return to Love Field and the signing of its lease extension. We look forward to seeing American again in the new terminal at Love Field."

That's a bit of a spin, even for the spin-meisters at AA--- canceling all service out of Love Field for the foreseeable future is hardly a positive.

What happened to all the chest-beating about how AA was going to be forced to send in a swarm of their beat-up, smog-belching old MD-80's to Love Field to compete with Southwest if the Wright Amendment were tampered with in any way?
