AFI Dallas film note: HAZE, a documentary about binge drinking on college campuses
The Gordie Foundation is sponsoring a documentary film set to play at AFI Dallas (on March 27 at 4 p.m., and March 28 at 3:15 - both play dates at the Magnolia).
The film - called HAZE - offers an unflinching look at college binge drinking and hazing practices, including details surrounding the circumstances of the death of Gordie Bailey.
Dallas native Robin Wright Penn serves as honorary chairperson of the Gordie Foundation, and she plans to attend the Friday (March 27) screening.
Here's what AFI Dallas artistic director Michael Cain had do say about the event: “Substance abuse is a huge problem in our general society, but an especially growing problem amongst the youth of our country as well. We hope that the screening and publicity of The Gordie Foundation through the 2009 AFI Dallas International Film Festival will help bring more light to this alarming and deadly topic.”
Robin Wright Penn adds: “For some time I have followed the story of Gordie Bailey and the work of the Foundation Board and Gordie’s mother, Leslie Lanahan, to promote responsible drinking on campuses. The work they have done, and the work that I hope to do as a concerned parent, is extremely important in trying to save a valuable life. Over time, we will be successful in inspiring local and national leaders to find a way to solve these tragedies on campuses.”

This is just one of the many films on our "to see" list. In fact, my head is about to explode trying to figure out how to get the most out of this festival for the money. The Star and Premiere passes are a little too steep for us this year, even though I do think it's hugely important to promote Dallas in the film industry.
Wondering if lounge passes are truly networking opportunities or mostly just loud-mouths and hookers...Or both...

Thank you for your comment. Many folks in the industry are purchasing the discounted pass and purchasing the Lounge Pass. It is mostly filmmakers and film lovers who are discussing the films of the day not to mention free beer, wine and vodka. There are also two lounges this year. One in Victory Park and one in NorthPark Center.

<p>Man, am I embarrassed. Robin's correct nomenclature (as now corrected) is "Robin Wright Penn," not "Robin Penn Wright."</p>
<p>Sometimes I amaze myself. (And sometimes I don't.)</p>

Don't worry John, Austin has that effect on people. It should clear up in a day or two.
That's ok Jason, he had me at "free vodka".

It was a "John must fancy the hot ladies" reference, and Rose clearly falls in said category, so sure.

Binge drinking is a myth. I went to college, and I never drank a drop of binge, and none of my friends did, either.
