The Dallas Art Dealers Association announces the 2009 winner of its fourth annual Edith Baker Art Scholarship. The young Dallas artist, Maria Cortes will receive her $3500 award June 1 at an awards ceremony at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

In early 2009, DADA’s scholarship committee (Edith Baker, Kevin Vogel of Valley House, Sue Flynn of Norwood Flynn, Kenneth Craighead of Craighead Green, Marcie Inman of Irving Arts Center, David Newman of Brookhaven Community College, and Lisa Taylor, Executive Director of DADA), reviewed materials submitted by 31 senior applicants, narrowing it to seven finalists, and later choosing a winner.

Besides the cash award, Ms. Cortes will have an exhibition at DADA’s Spring Gallery Walk show on April 18 at Norwood Flynn Gallery, an opportunity to choose a mentor-for-a-day, and to pursue a summer internship with a DADA member.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2005, DADA created a scholarship honoring a respected member of the Dallas art community and one of its founding members, Edith Baker. Edith owned and directed The Edith Baker Gallery in Dallas for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2004. Proceeds from several DADA events throughout each year continue to benefit the Edith Baker Art Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will annually benefit a graduating senior from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts planning to attend college and continue their studies in the visual arts. The first scholarship was given in the amount of $2500 and is increased each year.

The Dallas Art Dealers Association is an affiliation of established, independent gallery owners and not-for-profit art organizations. Through carefully chosen exhibitions, DADA makes an important contribution to the community at large as well as to artists, museums, collectors and students. As a group, DADA is pledged to a high standard of ethical conduct, a devotion to consistent public service and a dedication to professional integrity.
