African-Americans now account for half of new HIV/AIDS cases in Dallas County
For the first time ever, African-Americans accounted for more than half of new HIV/AIDS cases in Dallas County in 2008, according to previously unreleased statistics obtained by Dallas Voice this week.
The statistics show that the total number of new HIV/AIDS cases countywide remained relatively steady, going from 953 in 2007 to 961 in 2008.
However, the county saw significant increases in other sexually transmitted diseases last year, including a 44 percent spike in the number of new syphilis cases.
Blacks, who make up only about 20 percent of the county’s overall population, accounted for 482 of the 961 new HIV/AIDS cases in the county in 2008, or just over 50 percent, according to the data from the Texas Department of State Health Services. In 2007, blacks accounted for 46 percent of new HIV/AIDS cases in Dallas County.
“Every year we say people should be alarmed by the numbers in the African-American community,” said Raeline Nobles, executive director of AIDS Arms Inc., a service provider based in South Dallas. “They keep growing and the trend keeps increasing and now they’ve reached over 50 percent for the first time. This definitely is a major wakeup call for the black community in Dallas and across Texas and frankly across the United States. There is a crisis of HIV in the black community.”
Bret Camp, associate executive director at the Resource Center of Dallas, an Oak Lawn-based HIV/AIDS service provider, agreed that the 50 percent figure represents “a significant milestone” — albeit an unsavory one.
“For many years, HIV was considered a gay white man’s disease,” Camp said. “This shows that that’s no longer the only case. I think it shows we need to increase our education in the communities of color.”
Dr. John Carlo, medical director for Dallas County Health and Human Services, said although the 50 percent figure is likely to grab headlines, it isn’t as meaningful to him as the long-term trend, which shows that blacks in Dallas County are almost three times as likely as whites to contract HIV/AIDS.
“It’s a disturbing trend,” Carlo said. “It’s one that’s seen nationwide particularly in urban areas and particularly in the South, and Dallas is fitting into both of those categories. This is a really big concern.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the No. 1 mode of transmission for HIV/AIDS among blacks, as with other races, is male-to-male sexual contact.
A breakdown of transmission modes according to race for Dallas County in 2008 wasn’t available this week, but the statistics show that overall, 534 of the 961 new HIV/AIDS cases last year occurred in the category known as “men who have sex with men.”
Nobles and Camp both cited social stigmas related to HIV/AIDS and human sexuality as one of the key factors contributing to the spread of the virus in the black community.
“We still run into significant stigmas and significant barriers to having effective dialogue about HIV prevention and what it’s going to take to stop this disease,” Nobles said. “The primary barrier is a lack of willingness to talk about sex, which is a primary carrier of HIV.”
Nobles also noted that HIV/AIDS has increased dramatically in recent years among black women, many of whom contract the disease from men who have gay sex on “the down low.” In 2007, for example, 81 percent of all new HIV/AIDS cases were in males, but 32 percent of new cases among blacks were in females.
“They have a gay lifestyle but in the public they have a wife or a girlfriend, and so the disease is crossing over rather rapidly in this particular population,” Nobles said.
“They’re really forced into this secretive kind of underground life that is not helpful to them or to anybody that they interact with, and certainly as a health issue not to those who they sexually interact with or share needles with.”
Nobles and Camp also said they’re concerned about increases in syphilis and chlamydia in Dallas County last year.
The number of new syphilis cases went from 149 in 2007 to 214 in 2008, the statistics show, an increase of 44 percent. The number of new chlamydia cases in Dallas County went from 11,922 in 2007 to 13,495 in 2008, an increase of 13 percent.
Camp said prior to 2008, Dallas County already had one of the highest syphilis rates in the country.
Nobles said increases in other STDs mean people are engaging in risky behavior, which can lead to future spikes in HIV. The STDs themselves also weaken people’s immune systems, making them more susceptible to contracting the virus.

THE CURE for HIV/AIDS.......AMBUSH
THE IDEA that AMBUSH cures AIDS is being proven by the more than 400 individuals who have taken a dose of 60 ml three times daily for 21 days. The result is that AMBUSH 'KILLS' the virus by causing the protein envelope to rupture and the viral particles are discarded by the white blood cells. AMBUSH is able to 'KILL' the virus that are 'hiding' in the lymph system by its 'natural radioactive' properties. This process allows the body to 'return to normal health' with a corresponding immunity to that or those strains of the virus.
What is AMBUSH ? AMBUSH is a radioactive isotope of uranium that is found in the 'palm' plant of which there are more than 3000 species. When ingested, AMBUSH causes the body temperature in the trunk area to rise to about 102 degrees when the individual is sleeping. The preparation takes four hours per batch, which is then given to the individuals for consumption 60 ml three times daily for 21 days. AMBUSH is a herbal preparation in this form but it contains an active ingredient which is a 'NEW' crystalline substance, a drug from the 'palm plant' similarly to ASPIRIN originating from the willow tree bark
RESULTS: After 21 days on AMBUSH, ALL the individuals experienced a decrease in viral load to undetectable, an increase in cd4, increase in RBC, an improvement in general health such as more color to the face, decrease in Buffalo hump, an increase in gluteal muscles, a decrease to having no joint pains whereby individuals can bend to touch their toes, and walk up steps are but a few examples. There is also a dramatic increase in their sexual appetite beginning after the first week of therapy
DISCUSSION: In any plant concoction such as percolated 'tea', there are 30-40,000 compounds, whi ch would take the scientific community twenty years to isolate one particular ingredient if they knew what they were looking for. The LORD GOD has given me seven steps to isolate the active ingredient, which is soft and metallic in nature and has a carbon- uranium-sulfur-(classified)-phentolamine configuration or structure. This is similar to Federick Kekule and the discovery of the benzene ring where he dreamt the structure.
As an antiviral and 'natural radioactivity' producing agent, AMBUSH is also effective against leukemia, lupus and HPV. Here I am saying that I have 'GIVEN' AMBUSH in the same 'strength' and dosage to patients with leukemia, lupus and HPV. A 35 year old male with HIV found it difficult to impossible to urinate was put on 'green tea' and water while the doctors contemplated prostrate surgery. One of the doctors gave him my number , I sent him a supply of AMBUSH an d he has not been given any more ARV's, since taking AMBUSH 18 months ago, is in 'good' health and has expressed a willingness to be examined by HIV investigators like many others who have taken AMBUSH.
I have sent this 'IDEA' to most HIV research agencies, scientist of the field, universities, hospitals, clinics, politicians and news agencies to which it is REJECTED because the name of THE LORD GOD is mentioned. He has steered me scientifically through the processes such as which plant and how to produce the active ingredient. What are the odds of a Florida Pharmacist picking a plant would contain the CURE for HIV/AIDS ? I have never charged any of the people for their supply of AMBUSH but a life saving has been spent on the project with NO renumeration from any sources because AMBUSH falls outside the walls of modern medicine and research.
PROPOSAL:
My proposal is that I PROVE that AMBUSH CURES HIV/AIDS by giving it to a number of END-STAGE or DRUG-RESISTANT people and the scientific community watches their recovery. This proposal addresses the problem in that I have already outlaid the results to be obtained.
This IDEA is unconventional in that the scientific community has rejected AMBUSH because I say it is GOD given. Secondly if I wrote it according to certain standards, then it might be peer reviewed. However, THE LORD GOD has also shown me that there are five enzyme systems associated with the virus, reverse transcriptase, protease, fusion and two more of which causes the virus to be AIRBOURNE. This means that without DIVINE intervention mankind and ALL warm- blooded mammals will be extinct in a number of years.
The PROOF of what I am saying is found in scientific papers wherein it is found that when the protease cuts the viral strands, it cuts it at DIFFERENT lengths EVERY time, to which it should always be a valine at the end but is a different amino acid every time. This is why it is IMPOSSIBLE to produce a VACCINE.
Since this is NOT a hypothesis but there are about 400 individuals who have taken AMBUSH, here lies a vast area in which to check, recheck and confirm that AMBUSH CURES AIDS. Let it be mentioned that during the HIV reproductive cycle, reverse transcriptase converts viral RNA into DNA compatible to human genetic materials. Thus the human DNA has been 'hijacked' and since each person has a DIFFERENT DNA, then the new viral copy is unique to that person which shows that each individual has a DIFFERENT STRAIN of the virus. Consider two HIV positive people swapping viral strains and increasing its complexity with multiple partners. It can also be proposed that they be revisited as proof that the strain or strains that they had were 'killed' at the time of taking AMBUSH considering that a person can catch as many different strains as there are people who are infected by HIV. I am also willing to work with the scientific community in identifying those individuals who took AMBUSH and wish to be identified with this process notwithstanding that some are stigmatized while others are jubilant,
Once AMBUSH is verified as being able to accomplish that which is aforementioned then the next stage might be the natural and artificial synthesis of the substance.
Finally, if this is accepted or not, believed or not, THE LORD GOD always wins and this is the heavenly truth to which AMBUSH was divinely given to mankind for the CURE of HIV/AIDS and it will be here forever. Apostle Shada Mishe.

This is what we get when the 'answer' to cultural/racial-ethnic discussions of sexual contact between minority males amounts to, "Don't even think about asking because I sure as hell ain't telling". This is not a 'new' trend in the black male world. But it’s become a full blown nightmare at this point (with Latinos on their heels.)
No small part of these affected males are ‘down low’ but do not see themselves as ‘gay’ because they are in heterosexual relationships; infecting their wives and girlfriends in the name of omnipotent denial. This terrible sexually transmitted virus…and the HIV test results….is revealing what the church and its congregations cannot reconcile; that Biblical denial is one thing. But decimating your own in the name of 'I could see but now I’m blind' re: cultural taboos is not only living a lie. It's dying a lie.

This article displays blatant racist and ignorant notions about minorities with regard to sexual behavior. The "on the down low" phenomenon has been researched extensively with reports published in the Annals of Epidemiology. Here are quotes from the Reuters report in 2007.
"This assumption was mistaken in many ways, they explain. First of all, the practice of straight men secretly having sex with men is seen across all ethnic groups.
Also, Ford notes, while black men and women have higher rates of HIV infection than other ethnic groups, they also report fewer risk behaviors, suggesting researchers should look elsewhere to understand the disparity.
For example, she adds, having a bacterial sexually transmitted infection can increase the risk of both transmitting and contracting HIV, and it is possible such infections may be more common among blacks than whites due to poorer access to health care.
Research has refuted the claim that black men living the down low lifestyle are driving the spread of HIV, Ford said, but the perception that this is the case remains, even in the epidemiology community. She points to a dean at a colleague's school who urged researchers to study "the down low" after seeing a TV segment on it.
The view of black sexuality as deviant and diseased has deep roots, Ford noted, pointing to the way the public and the medical community viewed syphilis in the early 20th century as a disease of the black community."
Here is a link to the entire article.
http://www.reuters.com/article/health...
This is very important, because this report was not widely reported by main stream media - and many well intentioned leaders in the black community have bought in the racist hype. But if one takes a step back, it's easy to see statistics this startling can not be explained by oversimplified social sexual stereotypes.

If you are referring to me...my intent is to blame no one. I am simply pointing out that major medical publications and research have shown no validity whatsoever in the "on the down low" phenomenon. It is a construction that appeals to deeply racist notions of non-white sexuality.
I am a gay white male. I teach a lot of at-risk inner city youth in Oregon. And it saddens me to hear young black students say things like: "our community is too stupid to not get AIDS." They buy into the public notion that the disparity in HIV rates is from promiscuity and closeted gay sex - but the data does not support this at all - it is anecdotal at best. As the Reuters article suggests - other causes for the high rate of HIV positivity in black Americans should be researched.

Whatever your research shows.. the facts are pretty clear-- over 50% of the new cases in Dallas were transmitted male to male. We know IV drug use will make up another large percent.
So how is denying that going to help anyone?

Clay213,
You're missing the point. I did not address the male to male transmission. I'm talking about male to female transmission and the "on the down low" theory.
Here is a quote from the article:
"Nobles also noted that HIV/AIDS has increased dramatically in recent years among black women, many of whom contract the disease from men who have gay sex on “the down low.” In 2007, for example, 81 percent of all new HIV/AIDS cases were in males, but 32 percent of new cases among blacks were in females."
This reasoning has NO BASIS in the scientific literature. A major medical publication has said that such thinking is HURTING research as to why these women are so disproportionately affected.
I am simply tired of journalists not doing their homework and statistics being touted without citing how such data was gathered.
For instance, the latest D.C. numbers show a 3% infection rate in that city. This has been all over the news as a huge medical emergency. What no one reports is that one year ago the District of Columbia HIV/AIDS Epidemiology Annual Report said the number was 1 in 20 people in D.C. - or 5%.
see: http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2008...
So why is the news not reporting the great news: that in fact, D.C. has seen a 40% drop in HIV+ rates in just one year?!
Point is - the public needs to ask tough questions in the face of blatant discrepancies and lazy journalism - so that real answers can be found - and sick people helped.

Why should any of us pay for other people's illness brought about as a direct result of lifestyle?
When I took classes at the Cooper Clinic toward my certification, I believe information showed the percentage was as high as 85% of all illnesses in the US were due to lifestyle: cardio-pulmonary, cancer, ect. (include STDs)
So, some (black) guy doesn't want to wear a condom, huh?
You CHOOSE to have sex then you CHOOSE the risk and pay for it. End of story.

Let's have a refresher Don't Ask/Don't Tell course in basic arithmatic; 50% of the newly reported HIV cases are African American. Which however you add or subtract amounts to either a lot of shared needles or a lot of shared brothers not protecting their buddy's body.
Meanwhile I've attended primarily black churches all my life and the issue of homosexual activity and AIDS, etc. was discussed (until recently) about as often as Tara Reid's career. Multiply that and divide by 50%.

That's because no man that I know of has EVER given a care for the Buddy Body- be it man or woman.
Woman have suffered unwanted pregnances and the effects of STDs all because some guy didn't give a care to be responsible for the birthcontrol or BE TESTED TO SEE IF HE WAS A CARRIER OF SOME DISEASE.
Men don't get tested and if they do and know they are positive keep "playing" even though they knew they were infected!
It comes down to selfishness and all about getting off.

Let’s face it, once the FDA came out and said they had a drug that could "prolong" the life of an HIV positive person, a large majority of people just flat stopped caring. In case most of you missed it, a large percentage of our population, black, white and other, need immediate and often gruesome consequences to curb their behavior.

It apparently is too much to ask for Americans in general to strive to be informed about things that can kill or make us ill. And then it is even sillier to expect anyone to actually act responsibly if they stumble upon such information. We prefer to wrap ourselves in a cloak of ignorance. There are some things even Obama can't do for Americans. He might manage to marginally repair the economy, but we refuse to be made to think.
