New ‘50s-style diner Rock-and-Rogers opening in Plano

Rock-and-Rogers, a '50s-style diner whose roots are in Salem, Oregon, will open in Plano on April 7 at the corner of Park Boulevard and Midway Road, in the spot previously occupied by Chuck's Burgers.

The first two branches are located in Salem, Oregon (one is noted for its pink Cadillac hoisted in front), but owner Jamie Hawley lives in the Plano area, and decided to open a branch here.

The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but will serve the full menu all day long. That means you can get an omelet for dinner, which is surely the most civilized approach to dining. Other breakfast options include blueberry pancakes, eggs Benedict, biscuits & gravy, and Belgian waffles.

The menu will be nearly identical to what's served in the original branches with 18 burger options, wraps, grilled chicken sandwiches, entree salads, and baked potatoes with the usual "loaded" option plus chili and a veggie version. Breakfast will include "working man specials" with cheese-and-onion potatoes, bacon, and eggs.

The decor is retro with old gas signs and other '50s artifacts on the wall, neon lights, a diner counter with stools, and booths with red sparkly vinyl. Oh and shakes! Strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, Oreo, blackberry, butterscotch, and dulce de leche.

The place has already become a planned-for hang-out of the "Late Great Chevys of Dallas" club who are planning car cruises there on the second Saturday of the month, from April to October.

I've always thought, why isn't there a diner around DFW. There are plenty on the East Coast and I am tired of the frou-frou restaurants and I will be eager to find home-cooked food at a reasonable price.

Ed, not sure what you mean by "diner," but there are plenty of places in the area that we classify as diners/soda fountains. Of course, not all of these (especially Denny's, Steak 'n Shake, or Waffle House) are your classic diners. Teresa can probably give better advice, but I especially like Mama's Daughter's Diner.

And Alex, don't forget the plain and completely simple Poor Richard's - Breakfast and lunch, no dinner.

Just a simple "no brainer" antidote to chains and frou-frou crap. I'll bet you $10 James knows your name before you hit the door a second time.

...BUT, I will probably be camping out overnight the 6th in Rock-and-Rogers' parking lot.

Is this kinda like the old Studebaker's concept (Park Lane)that turned into a rock-n-roll place at night w/1950s music and dancing?

Or more like a upmarket Steak N Shake?

There's another place in Richardson called Southern Recipe....real chicken-fried steak, for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

So happy to know that a '50s Diner is finally coming to Plano! We lived in Houston for a couple of years and there were two "let's go to the hop" type diners there. We loved going there. Waitresses donned in nostalgic 50s attire and 1959 Checy. Can't wait until April 7th to go!! RC

There's a cool 50's style diner out in Bridgeport called Yesterday's. Was there the other day and the food was great !The prices are cheap compared to Dallas and Ft Worth. It is definitely worth the drive there. It has actual 1950's items around on walls that were fun to check out. Will have to get back out there when they hold one of their car shows. Maybe if I can swing it this Sat. for their trunk r treat.
