Dallas-based Blockbuster to use TiVo to sell, rent movies

14

Dallas-based Blockbuster, in a move that probably tacitly acknowledges how Netflix is kicking its butt, will start renting and selling movies through TiVo DVRs. Rentals will be available from $1.99-$3.99 and sales from $14.99-$19.99. Netflix already offers streaming of TV shows and movies through TiVo, but the supposed advantage of Blockbuster's service is that new releases will be available much sooner than they would through Netflix.

One question: With the proliferation of DVRs through cable and satellite companies, are people actually still buying TiVos?

They're also talking to Apple to bring it into iTunes. Which i don't think will ever happen.

Jesus, I'm just confused as to why someone would pay $150 (at the minimum) for a TiVo, plus $12.95/month for service on top of whatever they pay for cable/satellite service.

Plus, apparently their HD DVRs aren't compatible with satellite service, so you're stuck with cable no matter what. And that's not even to mention that you're (probably) already paying for the rental of a cable box -- why not just combine the two and get a cable box/DVR in one? Tell me if I'm missing something 'cause it makes no sense to me...

I love the software and I got my Tivo through DirecTV, so I only pay $5 a month. I did pay $150 for it though. It's an old Tivo so I don't get HD with it. I'm waiting till DirecTV comes out with the HD Tivo box.

I could just get a regular HD DVR but I would still need to pay $99 for it. I'd rather spend the extra money for the software.
