Texas House Bill would allow liquor sales on Sundays

Some legislation is good, some legislation is bad, and some is destined to fail the minute it's announced. Rep. Roland Gutierrez's proposal to allow liquor sales on Sundays is most definitely in the latter category. And that's not just because of the inevitable uprising by religious groups, but because most liquor store owners are opposed to Sunday hours, too. Gutierrez says that opening stores on Sunday would be good because it would allow the state to increase revenue without raising taxes.

I say go a step further and allow liquor sales in grocery stores similar to Arizona, California and New Mexico, not to mention extending the store hours to 10pm weeknights(Sun-Thur) and 12mid on weekends, as that would most certainly increase sales and tax revenue. Im also of the belief that getting rid of the sunday morning "blue" law when it comes to beer/wine sales as well, as its a needless prohibition with no true basis.

Totally agree with CD - it should be sold at any time of day or night and in any retail establishment that holds a license.

Ecclesiastes 3:5

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

----etc.

I'm assuming the "break down" refers to a good field cleaning of your favorite automatic or semi-automatic weaponry. No mention of a drinking binge anywhere. Ah, well. It must be true.

Dangerman? - Arizona, California and New Mexico

My 3 favorite places... to recommend replacing with a huge glass solar collector. (Since nobody likes my idea for converting the Middle East to one)

That would solve about 80% of our problems. We can take care of the other 20% by sending Rush Limbaugh over to the ME right before converting it.

I'm from Michigan - and we could purchase liquor 7-days a week, from local convenience stores, grocery stores, specialty stores... from 9 in the morning until midnight.

This was normal, no big deal. We didn't all all into hell or become murderers or abusers.

Amazing huh?

Honestly, New Mexico, California, Arizona (meh! - I can take it or leave it), Michigan... Yeah let's copy them!

Pretty blue!

Great ideas, all of them source

I pick my role models more carefully (and yes, this is not directly related to alcohol sales, but I keep hearing how much cooler these places are!)

Role model for our liberal contingent
- look more pretty blue!

Jason, I think your missing the big picture due to your politics, leave those at the door curly ;) All im saying is allow people to buy a product seven days a week, as well as let them have a choice where and when to purchase.

Dangerman - you always assume I'm political and feel comfy dismissing accordingly. I'm just saying --- and always do --- you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas.

Do you live next to a liquor store?

If you have moved to a neighborhood that allows that - and there's LOTS of 'em... states you've mentioned, parts of town we've argued about, then good on ya! You got what you want! But if not, I ask you WHY not?

THAT is the big picture. Not the "I want XYZ and the comforts of areas known for NOT-XYZ and the evil (what am I this week? Socialists/Liberals/Republicans/Carnoivore/Hannah Montana ... I dunno) meanies won't let me."

The "market" you alternately love and despise lets me live in a "no liquor in the produce section" part of town.

Chris Kidd, says:

Jason, Acutally yes I do. Spirits Liquor is right near my loft in ellum. We dont have any issues with them, they're really good neighbors who do a brisk business on a daily basis.

Im looking at this situation from the capitalist point of view, being consumer choice and tax revenue generated. I agree if a store wants to shut on a sunday or neighbors oppose, its well within their right, but theres plenty of liquor stores(chain/independent) that would love to have that day for business. Theres no "requirement" that would make these guys stay open, just letting them know they can. Ive talked to a few parties who run stores and they've told me they would love the opportunity to stay open later and on sundays, as they make more money and are able to service more customers.

IMHO, the association between liquor stores and "fleas" is due entirely to the current restrictions.

Tracy migh be right..the bums crowd around the areas where liquor is cheapest and most readily available. I sincerely doubt that you are gonna see a lot of bums hanging out in Jason's Plano produce section.
