Texas Senate votes to change “top 10 percent” rule for college admissions

Finishing in the top 10 percent of their high school class may no longer be enough for applicants to Texas state universities after the Texas Senate approved a bill Tuesday that ended automatic entry for such students. Most students in this situation will still be able to gain admission to some state university. However, UT-Austin, which currently has around 80 percent of each freshman class taken by top 10 percenters, is likely to be the first to take advantage of the change, which allows universities to start denying admission after they've reached 60 percent of an incoming freshman class.
