Wine Squared, located in downtown Denton, has been open since 2005.

Walking in to Wine Squared, the relaxing setting of art and the sound of classic and alternative rock in the background playing softly in the background make it feel like spring break all over again.

Wine Squared is a laid back wine bar, complete with patio tables for patrons to people-watch.

The owner, Brook Ray, opened Wine Squared in 2005.

"There are lots of bars in Denton, but not anything focused just on wine," she said.

Ray, a professor at Le Cordon Bleu Institute of Culinary Arts, said she feels it is important to educate customers about the type of wines they like.

In addition to wine, Wine Squared also serves microbrew and small import beers, as well as champagne, and offers various cheese plates and bread and dipping oil.

They feature Happy Hour specials where customers can receive three wine flights, which Ray said are a small taste of the wine, smaller than a glass, for $5. The flights allow for people to try a specific wine without buying a whole glass. Wine Squared also has a small section of wines by the bottle at a special, smaller price.

In order to educate customers, Ray offers classes at 7 p.m. every Monday night. Ray said past class topics include basic wine, beer, region-specific wine, wine myths, cheese and wine pairing, among others.

The shop sells snacks, beer and wine by the glass and bottle. Prices of bottles range from $7.99 to $500.

What Wine Squared lacks in size, it makes up for in personality through the various pieces of art hang on the walls.

Ray said she hosts' art shows every few months at Wine Squared.

The currently displayed art is the work of one patron's 92-year-old mother and showcases 30 years of her art.

Ray estimated 20 percent of Wine Squared patrons are NT students and is a frequent stop for many NT professors.

"This is the most punk rock wine bar ever," Ray said. "We're not scary. Students are completely welcome, but we have enough knowledge to satisfy even the … collector or connoisseur."

Denton residents Matt Mars and Christian Millet said they consider themselves regulars and frequent Wine Squared about four times a week.

Mars and Millet agreed they enjoy the wine bar's atmosphere, selection of wines, and location.

"[Wine Squared is] fantastic compared to other wine bars," Mars said.

My husband and I moved to Denton in 2005 and immediately fell in love with Wine Squared. It's the best little wine bar in the Metroplex, equally enjoyable for wine connoisseurs and beginners. Brook's classes are lively and informative. She's a real expert, but not a snob about it. IT's worth the drive up here from Dallas or Fort Worth.
