Restaurant review: Veronica’s Cafe in Denton

We won't try to beat around the bush by using euphemisms like quaint and petite - Veronica's, which only accepts cash, is truly tiny.

Veronica's Café is small.

We won't try to beat around the bush by using euphemisms like quaint and petite - Veronica's, which only accepts cash, is truly tiny.

A single light and the sun shining through the open storefront window and screen door lit the three-table, six-chair dining area, which was smaller than the kitchen itself. When we arrived the restaurant seemed to be at its maximum capacity with seven people.

Two friendly Mexican women ran the restaurant and called questions from the kitchen to customers about their specific orders.

"¿Quieres queso?"

"Did you want the eggs cooked well?"

"Is medium OK?"

The menu offered breakfast tacos for $1.35, regular tacos for $1.65 and lunch plates for $8. It offered menudo, barbacoa, gorditas and tamales, among other Mexican fare.

Jillian ordered huevos rancheros and pan dulce, or "sweet bread," at a grand total of $6.25. Like most Mexican pastries it was dry and not necessarily as sweet as it was sugary. There was an indecipherable dry pink topping and filling. The pan dulce was thoroughly enjoyable, but distinctly different from, say, a donut or danish.

The huevos rancheros were two fried eggs covered in salsa. They came with salsa, a side of rice and refried beans and homemade corn or flour tortillas. The rice and beans were authentic-tasting and especially satisfying when mixed with some of Veronica's homemade salsa. The fried eggs were standard and Jillian couldn't seem to keep the salsa from sliding off the eggs when she went to take a bite. The tortillas were served warm, soft and delicious and also made a good pairing with the salsa.

The moral of this eating story is that everything tastes good with Veronica's salsa.

Dominique ordered the breakfast taco and not knowing if one would be filling, at $1.35 each, she ordered two. The tacos consisted of scrambled eggs, shredded cheese, diced bacon and chunks of potato all inside a soft homemade flour tortilla. The tacos were like a Denny's Grand Slam breakfast in taco form, minus the syrupy pancakes. The eggs were not runny, the potatoes were not undercooked, the bacon wasn't too salty, and the cheese did not overtake the flavor of the tacos. Each ingredient could be tasted in every bite. Dominique was satisfied with the decision she made.

Take our advice, though, and don't expect to pay with a debit or credit card - Veronica's only accepts cash.

Whenever the cashier explained this to us, she must have seen our worried reactions and jokingly told us to get in the kitchen and clean.

Thankfully, Dominique came prepared.
