UT Arlington to hold annual art glass sale

Paperweights, vases and other functional items priced at $25 or less, along with dazzling display creations priced at hundreds of dollars, will be among the pieces of blown and fused glass available Wednesday, April 1, at The University of Texas at Arlington's annual glass art sale. The sale runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Studio Art Center, 810 S. Davis Drive. Ample free parking is available near the building.

Shoppers can bid on works in a silent auction from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The auction includes works by the 2007 Texas State 3-Dimensional Artist David Keens, as well as pieces by well-known glass artists Justin Ginsberg of California and Martin Janecky, formerly of the Czech Republic. Work by UT Arlington glass art students and faculty will be available throughout the sale.

Shoppers will have the opportunity to buy professional pieces for a fraction of what they would pay in galleries, said Keens, who has taught at UT Arlington since 1974. The UT Arlington glass art program is widely acknowledged to be one of the premier programs in the country, and the annual sale has been a major factor in the program's development. For student work, half the proceeds go to the students; the rest benefits the glass art program and will be used to buy materials and for new equipment. Faculty and staff build all of the program's state-of-the art equipment.

Keens' art is exhibited in major museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, the Dallas Museum of Art, Contemporary Crafts Museum in New York City and Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He has exhibited throughout Europe, Japan, Mexico and the Philippines. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan, and public and private collections in the United States. One of his larger installations, "Blooms of Enlightenment," is exhibited at the Euless Public Library.
