Dallas participants in 48 Hour Film Project should prepare for a sleepless weekend

From the folks at AFI Dallas comes word of the Dallas segment of the internationally-competitive 48 Hour Film Project.

Not to be confused with the 24-Hour Video Race (coming up on May 22), this crazy insomniac event allows a full two days worth of hectic activity (including script writing, shooting, editing and scoring) before participants are required to turn in their finished product for judging.

At 7 p.m. on Friday night, June 26, filmmaking teams will be presented with details regarding 1) a character, 2) a prop, 3) a line of dialogue and 4) a genre to get them started on creating their 4- to 7-minute masterpiece. Two days later - promptly at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 - they'll hand over their completed projects to event officials.

The fun part (for non-filmmakers) comes on July 2, when the completed films will be screened at Dallas' Studio Movie Grill.

A panel of three judges will come up with a "best of city" selection; all "best of city" films will compete for the national title of 48 Hour Film of the Year at Filmpalooza, which happens at the NAB show.

Other regional U.S. competitions include Seattle (where they will, indeed, be sleepless), Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Houston and San Antonio (and a whole lot more). Overseas, competitions will be held in the cities of Sydney, Singapore, Beijinig, Athens, London and Rome, among others.

Awards presented at the local level will include Best Directing, Best Script, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Acting, Best Music, Best Sound Design, Best Effects, Best Use of Genre, Best Use of Character, Best Use of Prop and Best Use of Line.
