Kids and family events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, May 6-12

0

Now that most schools are back in session, what better reason to get out and enjoy life? On deck this week are Dorothy and Toto under the skies in Allen, a fairy tale-laden play in Arlington, a street party in Denton, a suggestion for Mother's Day, and some classical music played by young 'uns in Fort Worth.

On Thursday, May 7, the bulkily-named Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm in Allen will continue their Big Screen on the Green series with The Wizard of Oz. It's not necessarily designed to be a sing-along version, but who can resist when "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" or "We're Off to See the Wizard" starts?

On Friday, May 8, the Creative Arts Theatre & School in Arlington will continue their production of Into the Woods, a play that conveniently brings together such classic fairy tale characters as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Cinderella. Theatergoers also have a chance (for an extra $5) to have an intermission tea party with the characters. The show will also have two performances on Saturday and wrap up its run on Sunday.

Saturday, May 8 is the day for the 2nd Annual Industrial Street Bash in and around Dan's Silverleaf in Denton. Along with family-friendly activities will be performances by Jesse Dayton, High School Caesar, Tejas Brothers, and Miss Leslie and Her Juke-Jointers.

Shamefully, there's no real big event aside from the slew of brunches happening on Mother's Day, but here's a suggestion: Dads, how about letting Mom rest for a while after brunch and take the kids to your local park? Relaxation is what all great moms need, especially on their day.

Finally, on Tuesday, May 12, the Youth Orchestra of Greater Fort Worth will perform their Spring Concert at the Bass Performance Hall. Since it normally costs, like, a kajillion dollars to see a show at the Bass, why not take advantage of this $10 performance that'll likely still warm a classical music lover's heart?
