Arlington could require permit to operate off-site Cowboys game parking
The Arlington City Council supported writing an ordinance that would require off-site parking lots to obtain a permit to allow Cowboys Stadium patrons to park. The council hopes that permits would make it so fans wouldn't have their cars towed or get otherwise screwed by the parking process. Only schools, churches, and operating businesses could allow parking. Home owners could not and residential streets around the stadium would be shut down to outsiders on game days.
The city council is also considering setting a cap on how much off-site lots can charge for parking.

This seems perfectly reasonable to me. It will prevent price gouging, to some extent. One imagines that it will prevent unscrupulous tow truck companies or individuals from ripping the fans off, via Fair Park style.

Arlington is so far ahead of Dallas when it comes to code enforcement and code compliance.
If you operate out of compliance with your CO (eg you claim to be a restaurant, but you are really a bar), you get one warning to come into compliance.
After that, they pull your electric meter.
Dallas tried that - finally - just once on Lower Greenville. Avenue Bar/Grill caved in immediately.
Of course, if someone at City Hall dared to try to bring the parking lots and valets around Lower Greenville into compliance, the outrage by people who don't even live in the neighborhood would be deafening.

I would hate for the Arlington entertainment district's parking situation to become like those in Ellum or Greenville.
I don't see it happening - having dealt with Aggtown Compliance before, I know they will be on top of it. Too much money at stake, and Jerryworld is the ultimate gold mine. Arlington's tow-truck situation has been under wraps for decades.
I just feel sorry for the folks living on the periphery of Ground Zero...

You have missed the point of the post to start with...
Arlington KNOWS how to enforce code compliance - put the rules in place and then enforce them (eg pull out the electric meters, manage the parking).
But when I post that comparison you get all bent out of shape and run off on angles that only the most astute mathematics professor could explain.
I rest my case.

I don't throw anything. What you deride as 'throwing a tantrum' things is simply a matter of my working to help my neighborhood taking matters into its own hands when the City can't or won't.
Resident Parking Only requires that more than 66% of the people living on a street sign a petition and pay for all the signs. All we do is say, Hey, we can give you quiet streets and pay for the signs. But you have to sign the petitions. And sign they do... the lowest percentage of signatures was 75%, the highest was 95%. The BelmontNA has paid nearly $6500 to take back our streets - they are quiet, safe and secure.
Since most of you don’t live here, we don’t care what you think about parking. For the few commentators who do (claim) to live here, you were voted off the island when the RPO petitions came around.
It’s called DEMOCRACY.
There are at least eight business vacancies; the property owners made bad leasing choices, and the businesses made false assumptions. Anyone now considering moving down here makes a few phone calls. They call the City about code and parking issues. They call the Council members about neighborhood issues. They call neighborhood leaders to ask if we need their business services.
They get answers that contradict the false promises made by the property owners. And they usually take their money somewhere else.
I just got home a little while ago from a theatre in Plano. I drove down the Tollway and made a point to go down McKinney Avenue. The restaurants were busy, the clubs had lines outside, and traffic was brisk.
On Lowest Greenville, it's a completely different story. The DPD officers told me it was quiet at 1am - no arrests yet. But that will change. Taco Cabana’s towing service had towed nearly a dozen cars. The City's [arking patrols had issued more than a dozen tickets and towed a few cars. The street is not full of people. The Whole Foods parking lot is three-quarters full.
Lowest Greenville will be a bar/restaurant ghost town within one year. The number of vacancies will double in six months. It's the economy, the lack of disposable income, and the lies many of these business owners and property owners have been telling themselves for years. The owners will soon realize bars/restaurants are not the way to go. They know it now, but they need the money too bad today to do anything.
Lowest Greenville is dying, but the cause of death is suicide, not homicide.
The neighborhood will become more secure (more RPO), better organized (BelmontNA has nearly 200 members) and even less forgiving of zoning changes and other giveaways with no benefits.
By the end of 2010, we will see the beginning of a new Lowest Greenville - successful retail services that are daytime centric and provide services the nearby urban residents (not people in Plano) want and need, like nice restaurants you can bring your kids into.
As we say in the synagogue, from my lips to God’s ears.

Comparing LG to Arlington is truly apples and oranges. Arlington sold its soul to sport events decades ago and residential pockets in shadow of the old stadium, the smaller cloisters now in the Ballpark fallout and in the eclipse of the new St. Jerry's Cathedral all know they have been bartered off to the legions of hell for income.
LG just happens to have some persistent commercial zoning that devolved from casual entertainment restaurant into party Mecca for downtown office workers.
Two totally different critters.
Trees - AT hear LOTS of stuff we just don't ask about. He predicted the Arctic Oil Rush, increasing postal rates and the electrical failure of Hannah Montana's 2008 tour appearance in Phoenix, all before breakfast. Just doff your hat as he passes.

To JTMBLS
Since you are so damn intelligent and all knowing, let's see you answer this question. There is no clock on the answer...
If I am as powerful - and abusive - as you state, with the power to open and close businesses with the wave of my white-gloved hand (or is that a rubber glove from the paramedics?), then why did it take nearly ten years for us to get to this point? Why did I just not wave a finger, close all the illegal bars down, and bring in a bunch of flower shops, bookstores and coffee shops?
Here's the answer.
You are looking for a scapegoat. You ignore business reality, economic conditions, the change in dining and drinking habits, the economy, the bad impressions created by the bars (and not just my videos), the business owners making bad decisions, the property owners making even worse decisions (and lying to the business owners, which generates false hopes), and yes, Resident Parking Only (maybe 5%?).
After seeing the midnight Friday showing of STAR TREK, working the polls all day Saturday, and dining out on Mothers Day with three rambuncious kids, I need a drink. If you think it's easy turning water to wine (Chardonnay, thank you), let's see you do it.
Reminds of me of my favorite Prof Tom Lehrer song, Vatican Rag...

First you get down on your knees Fiddle with your rosaries Bow your head with great respect And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect
Do whatever steps you want if You have cleared them with the Pontiff Everybody say his own kyrie eleison Doin' the Vatican Rag
Get in line in that processional Step into that small confessional There, the guy who's got religion'll Tell you if your sin's original
If it is, try playin' it safer Drink the wine and chew the wafer Two, four, six, eight Time to transubstantiate
So get down upon your knees Fiddle with your rosaries Bow your head with great respect And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect
Make a cross on your abdomen When in Rome do like a Roman Ave Maria, gee it's good to see ya Gettin' ecstatic an' sorta dramatic an' Doin' the Vatican Rag

If you have not figured it out yet, let me make it simple and clear.

Avi, Heres there deal buddy:
When you began compairing your situation to the ones currently facing arlington, thats where you lost credibility in this argurment. I agree to disagree w/ you with this dicussion for the fact many people, including myself, believe you were one of the catalyst that has chased decent businesses away from your area and replaced it w/ the low-rent problems you have now(pawn shop anyone?). I think a successful urban neighborhood has to have good relationships to survive(neighbor to neighbor, neighbor to business, ect..), but when you decide to be contentious to others by your own self-serving actions, thats where I and others on here take exception. I agree you have a right to clear streets and trash-free lawns, no argurment there. What I've been saying all along is the neighborhood assoication(s) and business should join forces, purchase a lot and contract out a shuttle service to offset the loss of parking. Use the lot to benefit the area, put the money back into the community for beaufitication projects, maybe even donate some to the neighborhood schools. it would be a win-win for the neighborhood and business alike. Until then Avi, you dont have any business to argue in this or any other dicussion.
Thats all I have to say on this...

You sound like me, although I would argue that there is still a "home voice" to be heard in Arlington. I have a great-uncle who has resided there for almost eighty years, still drives and has an opinion about most everything that goes on there. Several other family members and friends have lived in "Sell-out Town" (as one calls it) for two decades and more. It is empowering, after a fashion, to reflect upon the influence which a little farmer's hamlet -- sandy of soil and Cross-Timbered -- has come to have on Big D (or, "The Octopus," as I call her).

Professor Lehrer should have stuck with Mathematics (and pounded his issues into the numbers), or considered primal therapy. It's not just the tactics, jtmbls- its the tactless way Avi goes about his little war. The people at LGNA don't support him? Snipe at them every chance you get. The people on Goliad, Palo Pinto, and Velasco don't support RPO? Write up a brash article telling people to park on their streets. While I do give Avi credit for his role in the Lone Star towing debacle, I just wish he would use that mountain of energy in a more positive manner. You want better restaurants and shops on Lower Greenville? Which ones have you contacted to show all the positive attributes and possibilities of the area? I don't expect ever to see anything beneficial come from his continuous negative tirades. Just a sad, bitter man. Too bad.

Mr. Kelly's comments bear an answer --- and I will move on to moving mountains elsewhere...
LGNA opposes RPO since it would tick off their (legal) restaurant friends north of Vickery (but it's gonna happen anyway). They want the bad (illegal) bars to stay south of Belmont and RPO is making many business owners consider moving north (one already has, with attendant issues).
The push for free parking on Velasco, Palo Pinto and Goliad was a spoof! Only someone took it serious and went all boycott ballistic.
How am I supposed to bring more restaurants here? I am not the landlord, I don't set the per square foot rates, and I don't negotiate parking agreements. If you want Marc Andres' or Beau Reese's phone numbers, I have them for you.
I did talk to some of the restaurant/bar owners. We even had a great concept on the table for a food event. But when the Andres' and Reese's showed their true colors (read: Bars make more money than retail stores), all of sudden no one wanted to talk anymore.
In general, I find it useless to talk to these guys since they are too tied into the current (and lousy) existing contracts and arrangements. I don't do business with them in any way and I find my blood pressure is much lower for it.
There is very little dialogue between the bars and the neighborhood - unless you count the phrase, "Can I have another beer?" And that is the only thing the bar owners want - more money, more parking on our streets (and less bitching about the noise and less bad press, like the story about this weekend's armed robbery).
It is NOT the responsibility of any neighborhood to support a business in its midst. The businesses here claim to neighborhood centric, but 90% of their patrons are not from this area (if they were, parking would not be an issue??).
The only way to protect our property rights and quality of life- the only tool we have by law - is Resident Parking Only. If you don't live here, you can only point and scream and grimace that the bad neighbors are not letting you park on the streets, but in the end you do not have the right to tell us we should let you park on the street.
Is it a coincidence that once RPO came in like a storm, that the bar owners and out of town patrons increased the level of vitriolic comments? I don't think so.
Bars may come and go (please), but RPO is frigging forever!

I have to agree with Avi about one thing: "It is NOT the responsibility of any neighborhood to support a business in its midst."
But I also agree with jtmbls's statement: "It is not your goals that I find offensive, it’s your tactics."
Avi, I think a lot of the people who currently dislike you and ridicule you would actually support your causes if you went about things a bit more diplomatically and with more decorum.
Two more points I'd like to state (even though this is not the right article to post them on):
1.) I don't think telling Avi to just move somewhere else if he doesn't like it is a valid argument point. People should have the right to live wherever they want and not be affected too much by the other people who work and live and play in that area. For example: we can call the cops on our neighbors in any suburb when they throw loud parties. It's just that in Avi's situation, his neighbors are bars (that may or may not be legal) that throw parties every single weekend and invite several hundreds of people.
2.) I don't think LG is ever going to die as a bar destination spot. The economy is going to bounce back and it's still closer, safer, and easier than downtown Dallas.
