Duncanville implements mandatory furlough program for city employees

In an effort to combat budget shortfalls, the City of Duncanville is implementing a mandatory furlough program for several days for the rest of the year. Under the furlough program, City employees will be required to take three days of leave without pay during the current fiscal year.

Duncanville City Manager Kent Cagle said the furlough program is in response to a significant reduction in the City's revenue as a result of the nation's economic downturn.

“The furlough program is one of the last options available short of laying off employees. Layoffs would significantly decrease the level of service to our citizens,” said Cagle. “Furloughs are a short term fix to help balance this year's budget. As we prepare for the 2009-2010 budget, which starts October 1, we will be working diligently towards finding a more permanent, long term solution to deal with budget shortages.”

To maximize the energy and personnel cost savings, the City has scheduled the furlough days to coincide with holiday weekends. As a result of the furlough policy, all City offices (City Hall, Recreation Center, Public Library, and Service Center) will be closed on the following days:
