Voters in the Carroll Independent School District approved all three bond propositions in Saturday’s election and elected Read Ballew and Erin Shoupp to Places 4 and 5 on the Board of Trustees.
The $114.1 million Proposition 1 package, which includes construction of a new elementary school, a new Carroll Middle School, infrastructure and instructional technology districtwide, maintenance and security projects, was approved by 66 percent of the voters. A total of 3,864 ballots were cast in favor of the first proposition, and 1,965 ballots were cast against it.
Voters approved the second proposition with 65 percent of the vote. The package includes new construction and facility improvements for extracurricular programs including art, athletics, band and theatre. This $19.3 million proposition involves projects at Durham and Eubanks Intermediate Schools, Dawson Middle School, Carroll High and Carroll Senior High School. A total of 3,766 ballots were cast in favor of Proposition 2; 2,053 ballots were cast against Proposition 2.
Proposition 3 was approved with 55 percent of the vote. This proposition calls for a 1,600 seating expansion project at Dragon Stadium, along with the associated restrooms, parking and concession expansions. The $4.6 million proposition also includes field turf replacement. A total of 3,217 ballots were cast in favor of Proposition 3; 2,585 ballots were cast against Proposition 3.
“We are extremely pleased to see such a large voter turnout,” said School Superintendent David Faltys. “What a great community effort on behalf of the children of Carroll ISD. I cannot say enough about the work of the citizens on our Long-Range Facility Planning Committee. We appreciate their research, planning and their recommendations. With this voter approval, we will now move forward in the bidding and building process as we oversee and complete the construction of new facilities and technology for our students.”
In the Trustee election, incumbent Erin Shoupp garnered 4,255 votes running unopposed for another three-year term.
In Place 4, Read Ballew beat challenger Jamie Cadiz by 1,412 votes. Ballew had a total of 3,094 votes and Cadiz had 1,682.
Thirty-one percent of the district’s 18,925 registered voters participated in Saturday’s election. The Carroll School Board is expected to canvass the election votes on May 18 in the auditorium of Johnson Elementary School. They also plan to swear in the newly-elected Trustees that evening.
