WIF.D/Texas Film Commission - P.A. Workshop
- When: Saturday, May 16, 2009, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Where: MPS Studios Dallas, 141 Regal Row, Dallas
- Cost: $75
- Age limit: 18+
Women in Film Dallas (WIF.D) will hold two days of training designed to give participants a taste of the role of Production Assistant, which is the primary entry-level position in the world of filmmaking.
Working in concert with the Texas Film Commission, the Saturday/Sunday (May 16 - 17) training sessions will allow would-be P.A.s to build their work experience, receive exposure to the workings of various film departments and find out what's required in order for them to move up the film/video production ladder.
This introductory course will be taught by working professionals and will include instruction in terminology, set etiquette and paperwork. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn from crew members in all areas of production, along with simulations of on-set work flow, advice on writing a targeted resume and tips for a successful job search.
Perhaps just as important as the training, participants will get to meet and network with professional crew already working in the local filmmaking industry. Attendees will receive a certification from the Texas Film Commission and will be listed in the Texas Production Directory; they will also become eligible for further training in specialized areas such as Camera, Grip, Locations, Set Dressing and Props, Video Assist, Lighting, Art Department/Set Construction, Production Sound and Wardrobe.
At a cost of $75 for the two-day session. the training is a bargain. To be eligible you must:
* be 18 years of age or older
* be a legal resident of the State of Texas
* have a valid Texas D.L. or I.D.
* be legally eligible to work in the U.S.
* have rudimentary math/reading skills (English)
Participants should arrive in comfortable and protective outdoor-oriented clothing (bring a raincoat if the weather dictates); closed-toe shoes suitable for scampering around; and a hat, some sunblock and sunglasses (particularly for day two).
Here's how to register for the course:
1. Print out the .pdf registration form and fax the completed form to 214-630-1761.
2. Pay online or send a check (with the form) to WIF.D, 2600 Stemmons Fwy., Ste. 117, Dallas, TX 75207; be sure to bring the online receipt with you on the day of the course.
3. Call Cassie Smith at Women in Film Dallas at 214-954-4488, or email her at info@wifdallas.org, to confirm your registration.
The training will take place at MPS Studios, 141 Regal Row in Dallas.
NOTE: As of 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning (May 11), there were eleven remaining openings. So sign up now while you still can.
