Photo Gallery & Match Report: FC Dallas ties Seattle Sounders 1-1 on “Drew Carey glasses night”

1

FC Dallas managed a first-half stoppage time goal on Saturday in Frisco to grab the point and the tie from the newest MLSers, the Seattle Sounders. Injuries would force head coach Schellas Hyndman to use all three of his subs by the end of halftime, but also gave younger players like Brek Shea and Bruno Guarda some playing time.

The Sounders opened scoring in the 18th minute when Steve Zakuni sent a ball from the right flank, finding Nate Jacqua who flicked the ball on with his head to Jhon Kennedy Hurtado. Hurtado easily put the ball over FCD goalkeeper Ray Burse for the goal.

Center back Steve Purdy, forward Jeff Cunningham, and defender George John were all injured in the first half and needed substitutions. As removing starters from the pitch often does, Seattle put on the pressure and several times found opportunities for the second goal, but never converted. FCD would get the equalizer three minutes into stoppage time in the first half when Marcelo Saragosa played a ball to Andre Rocha, who volleyed it home for his second goal of 2009.

In the second half, FC Dallas would be the team that pressed forward, with a number of opportunities fed by midfielder Dave van den Burgh. The former U.S. National Team keeper, Casey Keller, in goal for the Sounders, was able to handle most of what was sent his way.

The tie puts the Hoops at 1-6-2 on the season. FC Dallas will return to Pizza Hut Park on Saturday, May 23 to face the L.A. Galaxy.

NOTES:

· The tie brings FC Dallas’ record to 1-6-2 (5 pts.) and puts an end to the team’s four-game winless streak (three regular season games and a U.S. Open Cup play-in match at DC).

· This was the first-ever meeting between FCD and the Seattle Sounders FC, with the next match-up coming in the regular season finale at Qwest Field on October 24.

· Andre Rocha scored his second goal of the season, sliding inside the box to volley home a cross from Marcelo Saragosa.

· Dallas improves to 1-0-1 when holding its opponent scoreless in the second half. FCD had previously kept a second-half clean sheet in the 3-2 win over Toronto FC on April 19.

· Team captain Pablo Ricchetti returned to start in the defensive midfield position after sitting out last week’s game due to a right ankle injury.

· FC Dallas was forced to make two first-half substitutions due to injuries to Jeff Cunningham and George John.

· Nineteen-year-old forward Brek Shea entered for Cunningham to make his first appearance of the season, and Daniel Torres replaced John in central defense.

· Dallas used its third and final substitution at the start of the second half to switch to a 3-5-2 formation, inserting Bruno Guarda for an injured Steve Purdy (right knee). Saragosa joined Guarda in central midfield, with Ricchetti dropping to anchor the back line.

· It was Guarda’s first appearance since starting the season-opener against Chicago.

· Four Dallas players have now started all nine regular season games: David Ferreira, Kenny Cooper, Drew Moor, and Dave van den Bergh. Moor, Ferreira and van den Bergh are the only three to have played every minute this year.

· Forward Kenny Cooper tonight started his 41st consecutive regular season game dating back to the 2007 season. Only two players have started more consecutive contests at the position: Taylor Twellman, who set the mark from 2005-2007 and Alejandro Moreno, who matched the feat from 2007-2008.

· Defender Blake Wagner’s streak of 20 consecutive starts (dating back to the 2008 season) came to an end tonight. It was the team’s second-longest current streak behind Cooper’s 41 straight starts.

· Goalkeeper Dario Sala missed the game with a left knee injury.

· Tonight’s attendance was 8,247.

· This was the first of two straight home games for FC Dallas. The team next faces the LA Galaxy on Saturday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. CT live on FSN-SW.

· FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman on the game: “Andre Rocha scored a great goal and we came into the locker room with some enthusiasm and found out that our other center back was injured; Steve Purdy was out with a knee so we tried to put a makeshift (lineup) together. We trained a little with the 3-5-2 last week and thank goodness we did. Pablo did a great job at center (back) and I thought at that point with Brek Shea and Bruno Guarda in there it gave us a different look. It gave us what we’ve been missing, that bite and aggressiveness in the team and I thought the boys played a good second half.”
