Fourth Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition asking North Texas artists for submissions

2

The Catholic Foundation announces the Fourth Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition and invites all professional North Texas artists to submit their artwork for consideration. The deadline for entries is 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 4, 2009.

The winning work will be selected by a panel comprised of highly respected members of the local arts community and will be announced and unveiled in October during a dedication ceremony. The winner will receive a $2,500 stipend and have their artwork displayed on 28-foot-long by 9-foot-wide wall in The Catholic Foundation Plaza. Honorable mentions will receive $250 each.

“With the Catholic Foundation Plaza located in the heart of the Dallas Arts District, we are delighted to be a part of the excitement and growth in the Dallas arts community this year,” said Edwin M. Schaffler, President and CEO of The Catholic Foundation. “We invite local members of the artist community to be part of the activity by submitting their talents and work to be showcased on the Plaza Art Wall, just steps away from the much anticipated Dallas Center for the Performing Arts and the Winspear Opera.”

The Catholic Foundation Plaza is a 3,900-square-foot public space at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe and was dedicated in 2006 and was a gift from The Catholic Foundation to the Dallas community to commemorate the Foundation’s 50th anniversary. The Art Wall currently displays last year’s winning piece entitled “Magic Carpet” by Pamela Nelson.

Professional artists living in the North Texas area are invited to submit proposal designs for consideration to be transferred to a vinyl-type surface which will be installed on the Art Wall. The work must be in keeping with the location of the Plaza on the Cathedral grounds but does not require a religious theme.

Maybe prepare to be surprised and don't poke pigeons into holes?

It seems to me that -- while barren in some sections of her house -- the Church is one of the few institutions which still entertains art in a holistic fashion - as a part of and not apart from her encounter with life. Her sanctuaries are her galleries.

It's neat to learn that she hosts walls such as this one as well.
