Documentary on North Texas DJ to play at Dallas’ Granada Theater

Y’all have heard me talk about Brett Dillon before. He is simply one of the great treasures of the DFW and North Texas region. Aside from being the main voice for 95.3 KHYI (The Range) for well over a decade, he has been the gatekeeper for those of us who have looked to him to point out new and worthy artists that other stations and DJ’s wouldn’t dare give attention to, for fear of scaring off the Soccer Mom audience.

A new documentary, Hey Dillon - The Last Great DJ, premieres this weekend in Dallas at the Granada Theater. The flick serves as not only a refresher as to what has given this independent radio station DJ his staying power, but also to show us why this man is so passionate about what he does. Many great bands are featured throughout the doc. Many of them are acts that Dillon single-handedly introduced to the Metroplex and beyond. Ned Van Go is a great example and their music can be heard, along with Tejas Brothers, Darryl Lee Rush, Austin Cunningham and many other greats.

With the independent radio DJ fast becoming a thing of the past, this doc will be ideal time-capsule material. Maybe 50 years down the road, my grand-kids (or great grand-kids, I guess) will be able to pop that thing open, and after they find an antiquated DVD player, they will get to see what life was like for those of us who got to drive around and continually be surprised and enlightened by a man who was simply following his dream.
