Dallas frozen yogurt meltdown: Yolatte on Royal Lane in Dallas
Editor's note: Latest chapter in our series on frozen yogurt covers Yolatte in Dallas.
DALLAS Opened: July 2009
Profile: Independently-owned frozen-yogurt place, with coffee drinks and a line of pretty pastel sorbets. It's located in the small Korean shopping center that's also home to the well-stocked Ko'Mart Asian supermarket.
Ambiance: Clean, mildly sterile, with decor that's similar to the usual frozen-yogurt place but with an amateur-ish vibe. Standard tiny ceramic tile, yes, but instead of being used to cover entire walls, it's used here as an accent against larger bathroom-like white tiles. Furniture is an eye-catching shiny aluminum, very lightweight. Young employees are friendly and extremely helpful.
Utensils: Paper cups in a variety of sizes, regular ol' plastic spoons.
Price: 30 cents per ounce.
Yogurt: Yolatte is half self-serve, half not. There are three machines, two flavors per machine = six flavors. On the night of this visit, those were: original tart, green tea, vanilla, pineapple, blueberry, and banana pudding. The original tart had a good flavor and consistency, but the green tea had a slight phunque deal going on -- almost a cheesy flavor.
But Yolatte also has a freezer-case full of sorbets, lined up like gelato, with a texture so fluffy and a consistency so creamy, it's hard to believe they've been made with water and not milk.
So you can serve yourself yogurt, then stop at the sorbet counter and order scoops to top off your yogurt. It seemed odd, but the combination of original tart with bubble gum sorbet was fabulous. Most of the sorbets are fruit-flavored with some neat ones like melon. You may even want to follow the lead of the group of Korean kids I saw who skipped the yogurt entirely and just got sorbet.
Verdict: Recommend. Yogurt was fair, but having the option to combine it with sorbet makes it worth a trip. Plus, shopping at that Ko'Mart is an added fringe benefit.

Hey "Resa" for some reason this place (combined with Ko Mart) seems appetizing. What type of Korean junk food is worth buying at KoMart?

"sujin", whatever makes you think i would know anything about junk food? haha
Ko'Mart is almost like a mini-mall; it has a little bit of everything (although it's not as big as H-Mart up in carrollton). i'm not much of a meat eater, but i've read elsewhere that they have a good selection of meat, and there's a food court where you can get meals very cheap. they also have a good selection of asian cookware.
i want to buy a mandoline, a fancy vegetable slicer that lets you make perfectly symmetrical slices. a friend told me they have them there cheap. i just haven't gotten around to getting it yet

Without junk food, we would not have freeways, while ..The concession of such foods does create jobs and the housewife, well she works there too, A/T, I love ice cream....and you do too,,

They have really fun salty seaweed squares, chocolate panda snacks, dried fish, mochi ice cream (flavored ice cream surrounded by gummy rice), bean-filled pastries, frozen dumplings... I know I am forgetting a few hundred things. I love Asian snack food. The food at Komart's cafeteria is not the greatest but it is cheap. The clientele is more diverse than you would imagine and you often share tables.

"Resa" I know you know a thing or two about junk food. I saw you one time at the old school Albertsons off of Mockingbird and Skillman. You have a shopping packed with snackwells and Kleenex. I thought to myself that you must be watching "The English Patient" that night. Why? Because I buy the same thing every time "Step Mom" comes on. ;)
