Spoken word artist Gino Marrow visits brooklyn Jazz Cafe
A four-time regional slam champion, spoken word phenomenon, and motivational speaker, Morrow is no stranger to the microphone.
Renowned spoken word artist Gino Morrow will be the featured performer at December’s Spoken Jazz at brooklyn Jazz Café in Dallas. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by SpokenWord Events and brooklyn Jazz Café.
A four-time regional slam champion, spoken word phenomenon, and motivational speaker, Morrow is no stranger to the microphone. He has opened for — or shared the stage with — Ursula Rucker, Gwendolyn Brooks, The Last Poets, Saul Williams, Gil Scott Heron, Dick Gregory, and a host of other spoken word legends. His published works are Spitfire, African-American Folktales for Children, and Souls of My Brothers.
The native Dallas band, Mahogany and the Jam Box, will perform live jazz before and during the spoken word sets. For more information about Mahogany and the Jam Box, go to www.myspace.com/mahoganytheartist.
Spoken Jazz is an event which fuses music and poetry by providing artists and their carnivores a space to socialize and hear local and national SpokenWord performers. Since music has seemingly always been an integral part of poetry — at least in the alleyways and speakeasies in which many times it was performed (i.e., Gil Scott Herron, The Last Poets) — Spoken Jazz utilizes music, primarily Neo-soul and “Old School,” as a backdrop and added impetus for the event. Each month, SpokenWord artists are asked to shape their performances around a particular theme. This helps keep the interest of the audience as it prevents artists from having their performances revolve around the same subject matter, while pushing them to explore different topics.
