City of Rowlett to honor veterans with commemorative ceremony on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

In beautiful Veterans' Park in downtown Rowlett.

— The City of Rowlett will proudly honor the nation's Veterans with a special commemorative ceremony on Veterans' Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. in beautiful Veterans' Park in downtown Rowlett.

U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson will be the keynote speaker and hundreds are expected to turn out for this special event.

Mayor John Harper, a retired USAF Veteran, will serve as emcee for the event and the Rowlett Integrated Fire Rescue and Police color guard will present the colors. City Councilman Chris Kilgore, retired U.S. Coast Guard, will lead the pledge of allegiance. The national anthem will be sung by Reverend Ryan Johnston from the Lavon Drive Baptist Church.

Mayor Harper will then recognize the veterans in the audience and provide background on the POW years that U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson endured. The Integrated Rowlett Police / Fire Department Honor Guard will present the colors for the ceremony followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Veterans' Park was dedicated in November 2003 and is nestled quietly beneath the historic water tower in downtown Rowlett, just west of the Rowlett Public Library in the Historic Downtown Rowlett district. The park was designed as a special public space that offers elegant dignity while sharing the history of human conflict and the growth of Rowlett. Elements include a water runnel timeline that greets visitors as they enter the park from Main Street. A future addition to the park will be the event columns denoting in relief the conflicts that the United States has been involved in, including but not limited to, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict, the Desert Storm campaigns, and most recently, the war on terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq.
