Reunion Arena demolition to start at 7 a.m. Tuesday
Was originally set for December 7-21, but demolition decided to move it up so they could recycle the steel in November.
DALLAS The Reunion Arena roof structure demolition will start at 7 a.m. Tuesday and may take until Thursday to be completely on the ground. The controlled drop of the roof structure was originally set for a December 7-21 timeframe, but A&R Demolition has decided to move the event up to facilitate recycling the structural steel in the month of November.
A&R Demolition will bring in Advanced Explosive Demolition (AED) to assist in the controlled drop of the roof. Under A&R Demolition, AED will use a process called "Tripping" in which the roof structure is weakened and pulled down on itself without the use of explosives. The construction site will be locked down during the procedure. Unlike implosions, which use explosives to quickly bring structures down, this process is much slower and estimated to take one to three days.
The Learning Channel (TLC) will film the process for an upcoming series, "The Imploders" which documents the activities of AED and in particular owners Eric and Lisa Kelly. The pilot will premiere on TLC December 17. Each episode follows Eric and Lisa managing family life on the road as they travel to a different city in order to bring down a building, bridge, or other large structure. Many episodes will include an implosion, where others showcase the "Tripping" process being used in the Reunion Arena project.
The city is continuing to be good stewards of the environment during this process. The set goal of 75% recycled materials has been met without counting the steel roof structure which will result in a higher recycling percentage of building materials.
