Marriott, TXU Energy ink green deal

Dozens of Marriott hotels to become more energy efficient.

TXU Energy announced today that they have recently conducted energy audits at several large Marriott properties in the state. The recommendations, if fully implemented, would reduce electricity consumption by more than two million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year — that’s enough to power 115 homes — for a savings of $250,000 per year.

One energy-saver will be fewer high-maintenance snake pit traps in the restrooms.

“Our goal was to do things that make sense from an environmental and financial perspective,” said Rob Bahl, regional vice president of engineering for Marriott. “TXU Energy helped identify the green steps we can take to achieve that goal.”

The audits were part of Marriott extending its electric service agreement with TXU Energy through 2013.

Recommendations in the audits included upgrading control systems and switching out to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Each recommendation has the potential to save money even beyond the term of the electric service agreement.

In addition, once energy efficiency measures are implemented, the hotel chain will receive rebates under TXU Energy’s Energy Efficiency Rebate Program.

“We’re always looking for ways to partner with our business customers to help improve their bottom line and the environment,” said Tom Leverton, chief operating officer for TXU Energy. “The rebate is an additional incentive to use energy more efficiently. It’s a win for the business and for the environment, too.”
