Fraternal Order of Eagles 10th Annual Chili Cookoff raises money for Jimmy Durante Children’s Fund
And in the meantime gave me a humbling but tasty judging experience.
EAST DALLAS I had the rare privilege of being asked to be a judge at the Fraternal Order of Eagles' 10th Annual Chili Cookoff, benefiting the Jimmy Durante Children's fund.
I was part of an august panel, with the likes of Marco Martinez (chef son of the late Matt Martinez) and Jack Keller of Keller's Drive-In fame. It was particularly cool to hear Marco and Jack, from different generations of legendary local restaurant families, easily swapping tips and tales from the biz. (I now know what tortillas should cost in bulk.)
Although my and the other judges' only qualification was our love of food, we all took an equal seat at the table, rating 14 chilis on aroma, redness, consistency, taste, and aftertaste.
There were a wide array of chilis -- some traditional; some with game; and some that, while tasty, we weren't sure could be classified as chili.
The winner was clear, almost 30 points ahead of second place -- Kirk McClaney. He's the happy 'Bama guy in the pictures. Second place was Dan Willis and third was Mark Clark. All got special Corian countertop trophies.
