State Fair of Texas livestock auction earns some record bids
Phoenix 1 Restoration and Construction Limited bought the 2009 grand champion steer for a record-breaking $96,000, and gross sales of 4-H/FFA animals offered to market totaled $1,060,421.60 at the annual State Fair Youth Livestock Auction of Champions on Oct. 2.
The grand champion steer was owned by Kaycie B. Carter of Caney Creek FFA. The reserve grand champion, owned by Taylor Cody of Parker Co 4-H, was purchased by a group of State Fair Food Concessionaires for $20,000.
Tom Thumb Food & Pharmacy purchased the grand champions in four categories. The top market swine, owned by Kayln M. Moore of Fort Elliott FFA, sold for $10,000, and the grand champion market lamb, owned by Cuatro Schauer of Bee Co 4-H, brought $10,000. The grand champion market goat, owned by Seth Harris of Tom Green Co 4-H, was purchased for $11,000, and Tom Thumb paid $3,000 for the winning pen of three market broilers owned by Kaelie Ehlers of Riesel FFA.
In addition to the money pocketed by the young people showing the animals, bids exceeding the pre-established caps for champions generated funds for the State Fair Scholarship Program, which this year is providing $150,000 in awards to young people attending Texas colleges.
