W.T. White junior wins gold medal Oklahoma rowing regatta

W. T. White Junior Savannah Smith participated in The 2009 OCU Boot of the Oklahoma rowing regatta October 3 and 4 on the Oklahoma River and won both gold and bronze medals in the process.

Saturday’s 4000m collegiate, masters, and juniors racing saw Smith’s club team HP Crew score bronze in her 8+ race, which qualified her boat for the prestigious 500m OGE Stampede sprints Saturday afternoon, where they placed third.

Her 4000m head races continued Sunday morning with a gold medal, first-place finish in her 4+ boat. She won by a very large margin of more than 50 seconds. Other HP Crew entries winning medals as well included the Men’s Youth 4+ (bronze), Men’s Youth Novice 4+ (silver), Men’s Youth Novice 8+ (gold), Women’s Youth Novice 4+ (silver), and the Women’s Youth Ltwt 2x (bronze).

Teams entered in the Boot of the Oklahoma included: Colorado Junior Crew, Creighton University, Dallas Rowing Club, Episcopal School of Dallas, Ft. Worth Rowing Club, Inc., Harvard University Crew, Highland Park Crew, Hockaday School, Jesuit College Prep Dallas, Kansas Athletics, Kansas State Mens Crew, Manhattan Junior Crew, OKCBF/Chesapeake Boathouse, Oklahoma Association for Rowing, Oklahoma City High Performance Center, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma Crew, Oklahoma State University, Prairie Rowing, Rowing Club of the Woodlands, Southern Methodist Womens Rowing, St. Edwards Crew, Texas Crew, The Cambridge School of Dallas, The University of Tulsa Womens Rowing, Tulsa Rowing Club, University of Central Oklahoma, University of Nebraska Lincoln Crew Club, University of Oklahoma, University of Texas Womens Crew, Ursuline Academy of Dallas, Waterford School, White Rock Boathouse, Wichita Rowing Association, and Wichita State University Rowing.

The next major regattas for Smith and HP Crew are the 5000m Head of the Colorado (affectionately known as Pumpkinhead, since it takes place on October 31) on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, closely followed by the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga November 6-8, which is one of the largest regattas in North America.
