City of Denton to host Neighborhood Empowerment Summit
The City of Denton Neighborhood Planning Program (CDNPP) is hosting its first-ever Neighborhood Empowerment Summit Saturday, October 24 from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Civic Center.
“The city’s ultimate goal is to create strong neighborhoods because they are vital to ensuring Denton’s stability,” stated Mayor Mark Burroughs. “The primary way to accomplish this is to equip our residents with the skills and tools needed to effect positive results, in terms of both preservation and progress, in our neighborhoods and community.”
The Neighborhood Empowerment Summit is the first step in bringing training to the community’s doorstep. The summit’s purpose is to provide education, leadership development, and civic empowerment to community leaders, grassroot organizers, and the citizens at large.
“The summit produces synergy between neighbors that generates a network of ideas for managing community building efforts,” said Katia Boykin, senior planner for CDNPP. “As a result, we have developed our first large-scale neighborhood forum so we can begin to partner with our neighborhood leaders in addressing issues and concerns.”
The summit’s courses are intended to engage, inform, and prepare residents to be community advocates. Topics include: Greening Your Neighborhood, Neighborhoods Influencing Decision Making, Planning Neighborhood Projects, Grants and Grassroot Fundraising, and much more.
The Neighborhood Empowerment Summit is for the young and the young at heart because we all desire to live in great neighborhoods.
