Marty Walker Gallery in Dallas to present William Lamson: Automatic
Marty Walker Gallery is pleased to present Automatic, a new exhibition of video and drawings by Brooklyn artist William Lamson, October 17 to November 14, 2009. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, October 17 from 6-8 p.m. This marks the artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
While traveling in South America last spring, Lamson began Automatic, a video and drawing project in which he harnessed the natural forces of wind and water to power three low-tech drawing machines made from found objects such as plastic bottles, string, and wood. A video documents the uncanny movement of each apparatus at work and its relationship to the landscape around it. The results of his efforts (or lack of) are a series of abstract drawings, each distinct depending on the type of marker, apparatus, and existing weather conditions.
A recent review in Art Forum described Lamson as “juxtaposing the systematic with the random, questioning his own role as artist while maintaining an individual aesthetic.” The Village Voice included Lamson in their recent article “Three New York City artists you probably don't know, but should.” In addition to this exhibition, Lamson will be featured as a guest lecturer at the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum on Tuesday, October 20, 7-8 p.m.
William Lamson’s work can be found in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts Houston, West Collection; Progressive Corporate Art Collection, Cleveland, Ohio; and the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
