My Denton Music spotlight: Baruch the Scribe

0

Danny Fulgencio

— This Saturday, Denton will welcome to town one of Canada's most talented and well respected bands, Elliot Brood from Toronto, Ontario. The show at Hailey's Club should no doubt be listed under your "do not miss" category, but not only because of our visitors from north of the border.

Opening things up on Saturday evening will be one of my favorite bands from this part of the world. Baruch the Scribe has been gaining the respect and praise from musicians all over the area for some time, and now is your chance to get to know them yourselves.

In a town chock full of singer/songwriters and folk musicians, these guys are able to stand out. But to be fair, it is not exactly comparing apples to apples. Their sound could actually be described as anti-folk. The band does not tiptoe around what they are trying to do; there is no hesitation in experimenting with the genre of music. It is evident in their music that if they have an idea for what to do with a song or a show, they will go for it no matter what. It is this refusal to be held back by traditional boundaries that makes bands great, and Baruch the Scribe is on the right track.

If you check out their MySpace page, you will get an idea of what I am talking about. The three songs posted are a sample off their six song debut EP entitled Evil Memories, which has gained the band a ton of respect from the Denton music community. Now I am a fan of their recorded stuff, but I really recommend seeing this band live. It is a more progressive and energetic form of their own unique style of music and it is what has really driven their success so far. I actually have only seen this band live once before, but it was a great experience to watch a band put so much into their live performance.

I cannot wait to get a chance to see them live for the second time this Saturday night as part of yet another outstanding show at Hailey's club off the square. Hopefully you can make it out and get a chance to catch one of the most talented young groups in the scene right now.
