Artreach offers painting classes to senior citizens in south Dallas

0

— Artreach-Dallas Inc., a non-profit organization providing access to the arts for economically disadvantaged youth and adults, the disabled, and the elderly, will offer painting classes for seniors at the St. Philip's School and Community Center in South Dallas.

Beginning Tuesday, October 13, classes will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 10 a. m. to noon at The St. Philip's Art in the Community Experience. Known as The SPACE, the center is located at 2120 South Ervay Street, just south of Old City Park, in Dallas.

Artreach board members and volunteers Miki Bone and Kay Dalton, who has been an active artist in Dallas for more than 30 years, will provide instructions in acrylic painting on canvas to approximately 15 men and women from the St. Philip's community.

"The arts have a major impact on the quality of peoples' lives and people of all ages, cultures, and abilities need creative experiences," said Dalta Waggoner, executive director of Artreach. "Offering these painting classes at St. Philip's is an example of how Artreach strives to provide these experiences to people who normally wouldn't have access to them. We're very pleased to add this program to our roster, and we're thankful for the volunteers who make it possible."

To further support the St. Philip's program, Boy Scout Jackson Solari, who attends Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Dallas, made 10 painting easels for the center as his Eagle Scout Project. Solari is a member of Troop 124, sponsored by Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
