Assassination City Roller Derby to roll out red carpet on Sunday
With the release of the movie Whip It creating a buzz, the ladies of Assassination City Roller Derby, Dallas County's only women's roller derby league, want you to know that they've been practicing for this moment a long time. "Assassination City Roller Derby was formed in 2005, and we've been training, bouting, and quite literally busting our tails ever since," says Kernal Angus, one of the veteran skaters of the league. "It's amazing to see everything you've been doing the last few years on the big screen. It really hits home."
While this Dallas league doesn't play on a banked track like in the movie, Assassination City's "flat-track" interleague teams have kitchy names that rival the movie's "Hurl Scouts" and "Holy Rollers." The Kennedy Conspiracy themed league has some seriously clever team names; The Deadly Kennedys, The Bombshell Brigade, and The Lone Star Assassins.
And these girls skate. Hard. "We have alot of fun and are fully aware of our tongue-in-cheek origins. I mean, we all have names like Ella Vader and JuJu Jitsu, but we are serious, competitive athletes, too," explains Trigger Mortis, a member of the league's travel team. Assassination City's interleague teams bout locally in the D/FW area, while the league's travel team, known as Special Ops, competes for rankings on a national roller derby level.
On October 18, Assassination City Roller Derby will be hosting two demo bouts, aptly named "Red Carpet Rumble", in honor of the release of the Whip It movie, and are even inviting YOU to come out and skate with them in an open session skate with the ladies afterward. Don't worry, folks ... the open skate will be more like a couples skate than a derby bout, as the girls promise to, um, play nice during the open session, so it's kid friendly too. Skate rental is free and the Burning Hotels will be playing a live set during the session.
The bouts and open skate with be held at Dad's Broadway Skateland in Mesquite.
Soundtrack to the bouts played by DJ Sista Whitenoise.
This time, the bouts are not BYOB for public safety during the open skate session, but concessions will be available for purchase. A portion of the evenings proceeds will benefit The Big Texas Toy Run.
All of this derby will be offered at a one time special promo price of $6! Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and kids 10 and under get in free. Tickets available in advance at Pluckers on Greenville/Lovers, Lee Harvey's, the Barley House, Dad's Broadway Skateland, and HD Tavern of Lewisville or online at ACDerby.com.
