Rockwall Boys & Girls Club at risk of closing down from lack of funds

The economic downturn has put a severe financial strain on the five-year old Rockwall Boys & Girls Club and now, if the non-profit organization is not able to raise $50,000 by the end of 2009, it will be at risk of closing its doors due to lack of funds.

According to an urgent letter sent recently to parents of the almost 500 member children, Board President J. Chris White explained that the loss of several government grants combined with the quick growth of the Club to at least 180 youth each weekday afternoon has caused a situation where the Club needs to raise $17,000 per month to be able to continue operating in October, November, and December.

In the letter, White asks member families “at this time” to please make “a tax-deductible donation to the Club at whatever level they can afford.”

He explains that at the current membership level, the amount that needs to be raised equates to $125 per member child through the end of 2009.

He adds that “the Club realizes some families will struggle to meet this level of giving,” but that “we know some families can easily cover this amount and more.” Many families have several children who are Club members.

White also writes that the Club will publicize the progress of our fundraising campaign so that members can learn of the Club’s status.

Two other changes must be implemented, as well, he wrote.

A parent organization similar to PTA will be formed immediately to “get more parents involved in the operation and sustainment of the Club.”

Secondly, starting Jan. 1, 2010, several program fees will be added to current membership dues of just $25 per year per member child to help offset the cost of current programs, such as crafts and soccer.

The Rockwall Boys & Girls Club was started in 2004, but exploded in membership beginning in 2007 under the leadership of current Executive Director Nan Ross.

Last August, the 50-year-old Dobbs Elementary School Annex building in which the Club operates received an extreme makeover from over 400 Price Waterhouse Coopers accounting firm volunteers, The Home Depot and Behr Paint.
