Piano virtuoso, George Winston, to play Lakewood Theater

A canned food drive for a North Texas food bank will be a part of the event.

Solo pianist George Winston will perform at the Lakewood Theater on Wednesday, November 4.

Since 1986, George has worked with a local food bank in every tour market to hold a canned food drive at the show. George has been raising money for food banks and service organizations for over 20 years, and will continue to do so with the continuation of his U.S. touring this year. Additionally, he donates a portion of his merchandise sales to the organizations. The food bank for this show has yet to be determined.

George is best known for his seasonally themed recordings including Autumn, December, Winter Into Spring, and Summer as well as Linus and Lucy-The Music of Vince Guaraldi and Night Divides the Day-The Music of the Doors.

George is currently putting the finishing touches on a new solo piano album, Love Will Come-The Music of Vince Guaraldi Vol 2, tentatively set for release in early 2010.

George has performed over 4,000 shows, which include renditions of his most beloved solo piano works in the three styles he uses: melodic folk piano, New Orleans R&B piano, and stride piano. He also plays some of the late Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts soundtrack pieces as well as performances on harmonica and Hawaiian slack key guitar, the name for the beautiful solo finger-style guitar tradition, unique to Hawaii, which began in the early 1800s.

George’s last release Gulf Coast Blues and Impressions -- A Hurricane Relief Benefit features six compositions by George, and pieces by three great New Orleans pianists: Henry Butler, James Booker and Dr. John, as well as George’s arrangement of the traditional “When The Saints Go Marching In.” George donates 100% of his artist royalties to various hurricane relief organizations. Over $50,000 has been raised to date.

The piano music George is working on is about two-thirds New Orleans R&B oriented, and about one-third melodic music played in his folk piano style. He is also working on solo guitar and is recording the masters of the Hawaiian slack key guitar for an extensive series of albums for Dancing Cat Records.
